Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4:46, went downstairs and rested in the rest room. Then I had some cereal and watched Eddie Izzard do some standup. After that I got dressed, packed my crap and drove to the race site.
Event warmup:

Warming up is for sissies. So I did lots of it. No, really, I don't warm up.
Swim
  • 06m 14s
  • 300 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was pretty nervous about being seeded as high as I was for the swim. I didn't want to be responsible for lots of congestion and screwing up other people's races. In the end, I got passed by 4 people, and caught 1 person that was a few spots ahead of me. There was a little too much traffic to pass him, so I lost a bit of time there. When I wanted to pass there were about 4 people wide in the lane and my lumbering body would have been wreck inducing.

Also it's about 50-60 yards after the swim that the timing mat is. In theory I swam a bit faster than this, but whatever.
What would you do differently?:

Not be sick leading up to a race?
Transition 1
  • 02m 27s
Comments:

The run to transition is about almost as long as the swim. I did actually catch someone that ran more slowly than I did.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster, maybe falling down the hill would get me there faster?
Bike
  • 31m 45s
  • 9 miles
  • 17.01 mile/hr
Comments:

Even though it's a short ride, it's not the easiest. There really isn't a flat section at all it's just up and down hills. Seriously my speed was as high as 37 and as low as 8...within 50 seconds of each other. Tons of passing since it's a 3 loop course (mostly me getting passed) but it's so hard to determine position. You might get passed on your last loop by someone on their first, and you just don't know. It was a decent ride for me though.
What would you do differently?:

Again, lose weight, be faster, train more, not be sick leading up to the race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

Took a minute to get some water and hack some lung crud out.
What would you do differently?:

Not be slow.
Run
  • 31m 20s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 10m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt way slow, but ended up with a time I'm fairly happy with. I felt like I could have kept running after I was done, but that I didn't have any more speed to give. That was kind of an odd feeling, to have "longer" but not "faster". I'm going to say that was because of being sick, but who really knows.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster. Maybe I can cover myself in grease so I have less drag. Although my sweat should do enough of that.
Post race
Warm down:

Posed in a manly way while the kindly gal took my chip. Then I flounced off to get a pop.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being fat, sick, and lazy.

Event comments:

They had pancakes! What's better after a race than a pancake? Oh, I know, a pancake and a Reece's Cup. Boo-freaking-ya!

Great race, Chad.  You are really funny.  I had to read it to Karina.  I look forward to training with you.

Nice race!  Yes, the run down the hill from the pool was, well, interesting.  It felt like a whole separate leg of the race.  It was great to meet you.
