Subject: Chocolate Craving after Lunch
I get a HUGE chocolate craving after lunch and I usually buy a candy bar to satisfy it. I would like to know if anyone has any more healthy alternatives to help satisfy the craving. For example, would eating a snickers marathon bar be any better for me????

I am no expert, but don't these "cravings" for sugar usually come after eating a meal high in fat, starches or sugars?

You could try eating something smaller than a candy bar. Throw a few Hershey kisses or a couple of Dove Promises into your lunchbag every day and eat them slowly after lunch. Dark chocolate is often recommended for cravings as well, because it contains more of the "feel-good" compounds per gram than milk chocolate. I do the Dove Promises thing, and it works pretty well for me.

I too, get a huge chocolate craving after lunch.  Most of the time, I can't fight it, but I try.  I eat "lunch" at my desk pretty much from 10:30-1.  I drink water with lunch and after, when I'm hitting that chocolate craving, I dig into my diet soda.  It's sweet and helps me put off eating chocolate.  Then, I visit my friendly co-worker and chocolate keeper and get a snickers mini or 2 hershey kisses with caramel or a few M&Ms.

Try and go for the smaller portion.  I can't keep chocolate in my office, because I'll eat it.  I'm the office mint keeper. You could also try tootsie rolls instead or I think Hershey or Nestle makes a chocolate flavored hard candy.  That would give you a chocolate taste for longer time without putting more calories in.

Life is too short not ot enjoy chocolate.

I have those cravings sometimes also. A little mint usually does the trick, far less calories. Try it and if that doesn't work, try the Hershey's miniature dark chocolate. Usually only one bite does it for me. I would try to stay away from a whole candy bar!

I had a friend who used to swallow a large spoonfull of honey after meals, she said it stopped her sweet craving so she wouldn`t eat candy.

A little dark chocolate won't kill you here and there, but you might try Jello fat free, sugar free pudding...I love it for deserts.

Most people get sugar cravings from a lack of macronutrients - usually protein - but not in all cases.  In most cases I have see, you are probably eating too carbs for breakfast and lunch and you body starts to crave them.  May I suggest you take a look at a book called "The Metabolic Diet" by Willcott.  There is a basic test in there that you can do to see if you are a "Carb, Mixed, or Protein type."  There are more advanced tests for Metabolic typing - but its a good start.  To think everyone should be eat like the Atkins diet, or South beach diet is a bit far-fetched.

Read the book.  Just a suggestion.

All the best.

In many of the forums I have read....including a posting you did on May 20 2005 - in the weight loss cal question (Yeah, shoot for about a 40/30/30 CALORIE ratio of carbs/protein/fat), and in many others I have read.

The reason I brought it up was it may be a protein defiencey, but I don’t know how many proteins this person is consuming, and what type they are according to Willcott’s book, so I didn’t want to say for sure…that it why I brought it up.  For this person to look at their ratios and start from there....
