Pre-race routine:

Up at 4:45, coffee followed by open faced PBJ.
Event warmup:

Short swim to get used to the water.
Swim
  • 06m 51s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was fairly calm, but pitch black due to the tannin. I was used to it from the last two years so no issue. Went off right when the gun sounded with the other people in my wave. Started harder than I normally would and got jostled some. Told myself to breathe long and kept going at that pace. Siting was good, kept right at the buoy line which worked well. Stayed with most of the people in my wave and no one seemed to catch me.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing and can't believe I'm saying that!
Transition 1
  • 02m 20s
Comments:

Overall, a minute better than last year!
What would you do differently?:

Not have to sit down to put on my socks.
Bike
  • 55m 1s
  • 18.32 miles
  • 19.98 mile/hr
Comments:

Goal was to go hard as I could for the whole thing. Occasionally I looked at the JOULE to make sure I was staying true to the effort. If not, pushed harder and there were a few times where I said “get moving”….. Legs were burning a lot of the race and I wasn’t sure how that would work on the run, but figured I would cross that bridge later. Avg Watts=148, Avg HR=158. . Since the swim was so short, I had zero stomach issues like in longer races which helped a lot. Spent 90% of the time aero. Rode the Seven.

Even though I was in Wave 2 I passed quite a few people. No women passed me, but three guys did, one with a darn disc wheel.

Drank about 15oz of water on the ride.

What would you do differently?:

Get a better feel for when to push hard up a hill and when to spin up it. I think in Sprints I should push harder, but not sure.
Transition 2
  • 00m 58s
Comments:

First time I have ever been below a minute. I think I got a boost when I dismounted. RD told me I was the third woman off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 26m 41s
  • 3.13 miles
  • 08m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

I turned on my GPS and never looked at it. I’ve only run xc courses this whole season and did this same course the last two years so at least knew what to expect. I ran as hard as I could in the areas that were guaranteed flat and tried to shorten my stride on the grass. Twisted the left ankle once and the right ankle once, but neither affected the effort. I think I did the best I could given the terrain and my current run fitness level. It isn’t where I want it to be, but am not worrying about it until after my IM. Bigger fish to fry!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Packed up my stuff, stuck it in the car and went to do my additional one hour scheduled ride. Rode the bike course a second time at an easier pace. By the time I got finished they were handing out the awards. Got my #1 AG canoe paddle trophy and headed home.

When you do small races it is easier to place that is for sure. The good news is I beat 75% of the women and 70% of the men that showed up!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall very happy with this execution both mentally and physically. I wanted a CR again this year and got it by 4 minutes throug a better swim, transitions and bike. Lost some on the run, but not suprised given the rehab and rebuild.

Event comments:

This race is in its third year and each year it gets better. This time we had chips, huge buoys for siting and more closed roads. I would definitely recommend this small town race.

Congrats on an awesome race, Suzy!! Hey, have you ever tried riding w/o socks? Shortens transition times...!! I can run w/o socks for shorter races but put them on for 10K and up. Love the perfect execution of swim and bike and having it all come together on the run. Congratulations on that 1st place finish -- it's certainly deserved!!

(Edited because fonts displaying weird -- not sure why! Sorry!)

Great job Suzy!  Way to hammer the bike!  Awesome!  Run was none too shabby either - I think XC adds like at least a minute a mile to my run pace...

Suzy,

AWESOME.  Glad you found some pointers that you want to work on but pat yourself on the back for a job well done.

For T1...you might want to skip the socks until T2 which will make T2 a little longer but probably not as long as T1 when you are trying to get dry socks on wet feet.  It's pretty easy to go barefoot in bike shoes but of course try during training.

What is tannin in water?

Keep up the great work!

Your awesomeness continues.

x 3 (or 4 or whatever) on the no socks on the bike.  I actually went for it on the run too and worked like a charm.

All your hard work is paying off!  Congrats.

You go, girl!  Way to get it done!!!

It's so different to pace a sprint/oly and a longer race, I agree!  I always spend time wondering "am I going too hard?" or "should I push harder?".....

But you did awesome!  Yay!
