I did my first tri a month ago, and just as you are experiencing in here, one of the best things about the experience is the comradarie between everyone there.. in other words, don't worry about the bike you ride, because whether you are 10th or 100th, my experience was everyone treats their fellow competitors with good cheer and support (as long as you don't zig-zag back and forth on the road while you're on your bike)...

The best example for me was after the race, there was a group hot-tub, and I was sitting next to Carol Montgomery (#15 ranked in the world I.T.U. rankings last year)... and she was completely supportive and interested in everyone there and their experiences... During the race, more than once I had people passing me, complimenting me on my pace, encouraging me.. giving me the "low five" handslap with a "way to go" while I was on the "go" side of the run loop as they are already coming back on the "return" side...   so, if your race is anything like mine was, I think you will find the experience totally positive, regardless of what you ride (and yes, there were a few mtb's in my race too!)...

And yes, the anxiety for me (but also the excitement) before the race was almost unbearable until the gun went off... and then it's almost like autopilot... and you go!

Good Luck fellow trier!

courtney_leone - 2005-07-12 12:22 PM Hey CJ-
, its a Schwinn (how embarrassing
What's embarrasing about a Schwinn?  They've made and still do make some decent road bikes...I'm riding a Schwinn Passage right now, and I'm pretty happy with it.

Could have been a lot worse...I had an advantage, I had a biker mom who would not let her son do a tri on a Huffy....you'll do fine

Remember, regardless of "what" you ride, you're out there, you're going to be doing it, and no one can take that away from you.

Oh yeah, and Schwinn's ROCK!

It's in the red family....got rid of the godawful gumwall tires that are in the pics and it looks alot better.

My appologies to cj12 though. we seem to have officially hijacked this thread

I'm glad you guys took it over, now I've learned even more........it doesn't matter what bike you have as long as it's red! Well, my green $75 MTB special that I got at Target will have to do for now, until I can upgrade to a newer RED model

Red bikes are faster

I've made a point to stay out of this whole red vs. blue argument, but I'm getting really tired of it. A red bike is no faster or slower than a blue bike. Can't everyone just grow up and acknowledge that when it comes to cycling all colors are the same?

Except of course, for a combination of yellow and black which has been scientifically proven in wind tunnel tests to be the most aerodynamic color scheme for bicycles.

So marmadaddy, what your saying is my mountain bike is going to be faster than a Cervelo P3?

On a trail, absolutely!

And let's not forget what the color scheme is for Lance's chopper made by OCC:

And to think, I was just about to add a new thread regarding how overwhelmed I feel regarding my bike (what components are the most important, what kind of saddle I need, whether I should get areobars...). Whew! Looks like I was stressing over nothing - all I need to worry about is the color! ; ) I was in the process of upgrading my blue bike but it looks like I would be better off riding my beater bike with the attached bike trailer that I use to taxi the kids around in because it is RED! Thanks for the info!

Oh man, even if I had a picture of the bike I used in my first tri I wouldn't post it here because I couldn't take the ridicule!  lol

Yellow and black is the way to go!  Hence why I got me one of these guys:
