Triathlon - Olympic
Total Time = 3h 02m 57s
Overall Rank = 567/881
Age Group = M40-44
Age Group Rank = 73/88

Pre-race routine:

PBJ, 32 oz water, pumped tires. Body glide on hot spots on foot.

Event warmup:

Easy bike, active stretching, easy run, swam in nearly 82 degree water! Clif gel 30 mins before w/water.

   Swim

Comments:

Charlie Horse about 24 mins in. Treaded water with one hand while rubbing my calf with the other. This attracted the attention of a nice life guard, but I just couldn't accept a "rest." Tried swimming w/o legs and kept sinking. Felt better after a while, but not up to "pushing it." I was thinking about how in the world I was going to finish the bike and run with a charlie horse, but re-focused on the swim.

What would you do differently?:

Maybe two days of rest instead of one right before the race. Banana or potassium before the race. Learned not to stop every time someone ran into me.

T1

Comments:

Even though I have walked the area, it took me a moment to remember where the bike out was.

What would you do differently?:

Walk the course and visualize transitions more than once.

   Bike

Comments:

Loved the bike. Never actually had rounded lake Harriet on the road instead of bike path, so the hill was a surprise, but not the end of the world.

What would you do differently?:

Ride ALL of the course in practice and not think the bike path is same as the road.

T2

Comments:

OK, so I ate a burrito the night before. This transition took longer. Also, race number tore and race belt needed to be adjusted.

What would you do differently?:

No burritos the night before. Check race belt for fit and have safety pins in racebelt pouch.

   Run

Comments:

Thank goodness for the run!

What would you do differently?:

Pay attention to my Garmin and start out at the planned pace. Maybe change socks at T-2 when it's so hot. Got lots of blisters.

Post race

Warm down:

Staggered over to get food and water. Got massage. Got results. Wandered around to get my bearings, went home cleaned up, got on plane and went to conference.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Charlie Horse in calf and spicy food the night before.

Event comments:

Glad I did it. Followed free training plan from Beginner Triathlete and it seemed to work.
