It was a beatdown. Hardest century of the year for me. I was not prepared for that amount of climbing, and it was a scorcher. The burnt mountain climb was tough, but the hills leading to and from it took the biggest toll on me. I definitely would have enjoyed it more on a road bike.
Glad that's over with!

Holy Hotness, Batman!

Wow was it hot out there today.  Course was definitely hilly and very little shade.  BUT it was for a good cause.

Hope my fellow BTers all made it back in one piece.

I am so glad that I am so dumb that I keep doing stuff like this to trump all the other sufferfests that I swear i will never do again. Its a cruel, cruel route. Even more so when it the real temp feel is 110 degrees.   kudos for all who sucked it up. To say the least this ride was humbling.

And huge props to my friend Chris Choatas who was King of the Mountain today. He lost his dad earlier this summer to lung cancer. I only wish that just torturing myself for nearly 7 hours onthis course would be the very thing that would elminate the horror of cancer from so many lives. But I love seeing someone with so much talent putting it to use in the name of charity. That is what using your gifts is all about, right?

And lastly thanks to Brian Balmes for his words of inspriation as a 5 time cancer survivor going in to battle round 6 before sending us off into our tour of hell. I know many of thought of him today when we felt like quitting. He did finish today, and definitely ahead of me. So huge, huge props to him. What an amazing athelete and awesome example of how the human spirit can persevere and succeed.

Major props to those that braved the route and the heat! It was for a great cause and it was scorching yesterday!

That was probably my favorite Century ride ever. I loved the course. Nicest route ever. Extremely difficult. I bailed on Conns creek, which made my ride 95.5 miles or so, but in all honesty, I might not have finished had I done Conns. I had to get off my bike at 94 going up that long hill at the end because I was getting dizzy from the heat... and there was only a mile to go. Actually, 2 sag vehicles passed me while standing there and asked me if I was ok.. I 'almost' got in one, but figured I had another mile in me. The heat was unbelievable. Several riders with me have temperature sensors in their computers, and they were all registering 101, 102 degrees actual temp by the last sag stop.

I was up there with 18 riders, and 17 finished the Century. About half did Conns creek, the rest did the 95 route (which should be an official option next time). One rider got sag'd from the top of Burnt Mt.

This would be a great Fall Century ride.

As an aside, WSB was filming out there and interviewed a few riders. Several of us from my group made the footage.

Holy, hilly, hellacious 105, Batman!!  I knew going in the route was going to be tough, but coupled with the heat it was beyond tough.  Never stopped (except at the rest stops and to help a few cyclists with mechanicals), but I sure felt like doing so - esp. on Conns coming back up.  For some strange reason the first hill on Freemanville was not too bad, but the final few miles seemed to go forever.  I used patches of shade as carrots to keep moving forward.

Definite kudos to everybody who finished the 105 and to everybody who participated to support a very worthy cause and organization!
