Subject: A GPS watch that lasts longer than 8 hours?
My partner is looking an ultra off road and she needs a GPS watch, but the Garmin is only good for 10 hours and by the sounds of all teh blogs I have read it fades pretty quick after a few momnths of use?  Any advice on a GPS watch for a long run with good battery life?

Same here.  Works well for Ironman too.  My old 305 wouldn't hold out with my former slower finish times.  I have 100 miler next year and I am a little worried about the battery life.  However, I figure that by the end of the race I am not really going to care what my mileage or pace is Wink

Which 100 Miler are you doing next year?

I am planning on my first 100 miler in June 2012, the Mohican 100 Miler.

Looking to get into Umstead before it sells out.  Since it usually sells out in a matter of minutes I am using a new 100 Georgia Ultra Running is going to put on next year as a back-up.  Since I live in Atlanta either of these races would be great.  I have just heard great things about Umstead's organization and support so I wanted to give it a try for my first 100.

Good luck!!! Sounds awesome! Good plan having a back up. I guess I should consider that as well for the future.

There's a guy around here who modified his 305 to use a portable phone battery. It plugs in externally, so the internal battery runs the unit while the external is unplugged. I suppose you would be limited only by how many fully charged batteries you were willing to carry. (each one adds about 6 hours)

During a 24hour I used a 305 and 205.  It was much easier to coordinate since it was a 5.4mile loop though.  My Jeep was at the checkpoint, so my crew was able to plug the 305 in on the inverter in the Jeep so after a couple hours I was able to swap back to the 305 and keep an eye on my HR again.

As someone else mentioned, you really don't care about your pace after a while... you're in survival mode most of the time anyway.  But I track my HR since if that starts to climb it might indicate that I'm dehydrating.  But mainly it's for post race data analysis.

There's the Garmin 310xt, which is supposed to last about 21 hrs., but I haven't heard or or read about anything that lasts longer.

A tech-savvy friend and I made this little homemade contraption. Well, I mostly watched.

Side view

It charges my Garmin 405 in about an hour (it will continue to track while charging, but the screen will simply stay in charging mode) and can be taken on the trail and set up without even stopping. I generally carry it, along with the charging clip, in a ziplock and charge my GPS watch as soon as I get the low-bat signal.

I'm sure there's a commercial gadget for this sort of thing somewhere but, hey, I live in the third world, so this'll have to do for me.

on backpack

I've extended the 6.5 to 7.5 hr battery life to over 16 hrs in training and will use it at UTMB, where I should be out there for at least 40 hrs. I could get a good 5-6 charges out of a single set of batteries.

Here's all you need: Four-AA-Battery receptacle/holder, a silicone gun, a female USB connector, some velcro and the four AA batteries, of course.
