Americans consume petroleum products at a rate of three-and-a-half gallons of oil and more than
250 cubic feet of natural gas per day each! But, as shown here petroleum is not just used for fuel.

The owner should have helped them by refusing to sell them any gasoline.

Indiana_Geoff - 2010-07-16 9:20 PM Flying is one of the worst things you can do for saving oil.  Are you prepared to give up ALL non-essential air travel?

A full plane uses less oil then a bunch of cars with just one person in each.

madkat - 2010-07-16 9:40 AM Yeah, I've never understood people's short-sightedness on oil. I have to suppress a snerk at people in line at the grocery story waving off the plastic bag like they're doing some great big sacrifice in the name of the environment. But they're stuffing their canvas bag full of packaged food wrapped in layers upon layers of plastic (the kind that isn't recyclable in this area), and vegetables shipped in from South America, and bottled water.

I'm one of those people that waves off the plastic bag at the grocery store. I bring my own cloth bags or I only buy a few items that I can carry. I hate it when the cashier tries to bag things or double bag things and they always try. It's like they get paid by the number of bags that they distribute.

I buy stuff that is wrapped in the layers of plastic, and although I do try to buy local produce, I live in Canada and sometimes I just want a banana. However, I can control the number of plastic bags that I take and can't as easily control the packaging and shipping. Isn't something better than nothing?

x2-I think the main point is that we need to look at the entire picture (resources, manufacture, use, disposal) and put some thought into what we are doing and try to minimize our impact. When we see something that doesn't make sense, try to make a change. As time goes by, we will learn more and can use that new knowledge to lessen our impact.

That's really food for thought.  Can you share the link?

Thank you for posting that.  That was one of the messages I was trying (and failing) to get accross: that even outside of gasoline/transportation every part of our lives still require oil in more ways than we can count!

And don't forget as part of that transportation part that without oil (most) people wouldn't have much, if any, food. The amount of oil involved in getting a crop from the field to store is huge.

To the OP, if I saw those protesters I would have to laugh. I agree that it's another misdirected effort. If they had ridden their bikes to protest... well, that would be different.

Walking is the only acceptable method because without oil there would be no bikes. Oh wait, without oil there wouldn't be any rubber for their shoes either.
