Sunny
Total Time = 1h 14m 25s
Overall Rank = 42/284
Age Group = 46-49
Age Group Rank = 3/18
Pre-race routine:

Got there ten minutes before transition opened and got a good parking place. Walked around nervously for most of the time but glad I was early.
Event warmup:

Swam about 200yds and very glad I did. Got a feel for the current and there was a steep drop off going into the water. Went from ankle deep to thigh deep in one step.
Swim
  • 06m 35s
  • 437 yards
  • 01m 30s / 100 yards
Comments:

I made the executive decision to believe I was fast and start in the front. (I had no idea seeing that this was my first triathlon.) I dove over the drop off and hit it hard for about 75yds and only had one touch on my feet.

Around the first buoy and I breath left and breath right and much to my surprise I was in the lead.

Half way between buoys I start passing people in the first wave. Goggles were a little foggy, and the two foot rollers made sighting a little difficult.

Around the second buoy and take it to the beach. Stood up a little early and dove back in.

Come out of the water and some lady yells "Oh A red cap." (my waves cap color) That propelled me into transition.

What would you do differently?:

Take the time to spit and rinse my goggles just before the start.
Transition 1
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

I had a new experience. The soul of my right shoe rolled up into the toe when I tried to put it on. I am not a good enough biker for that so needless to say it was ugly for a while.
What would you do differently?:

Put powder in my shoes maybe?
Bike
  • 40m 17s
  • 13 miles
  • 19.36 mile/hr
Comments:

I really don't think the course was quite 14 so my speed is inflated a bit. I think it was closer to 13.5.

I rode harder than I ever have. Two guys in my age group passed me within the first five miles. The last four miles I was done. My legs would come and go.

*interestingly I passed a set of aerobars laying on the rode???
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure. I wonder if I would have held back a little would it have paid off total time wise.

I also carried too much fluid. Who has time to drink?

Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

Everything went great accept putting on my watch. It took me forever but I think I needed the oxygen I got while slowing.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 25m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

The whole time I thought the run would be easy. I had no idea how much you can lose in the swim and the bike. The run was killer. I have run several sub 7:30 three and four milers in training recently so I was disappointed.

A few blisters running sock less but I think they are worth it.
What would you do differently?:

I just wonder again, if I would have caught my breath during the last part of the bike would it have paid off. I was spent.
Post race
Warm down:

Took a swim. Felt really good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Fitness

Event comments:

I thought it was a good race to be their first.

Rockstar swimmer!!!  WOW!

I knew you would do awesome (I had spied on your training logs before the race)!  Way to go!  Yes, the swim/bike definitely sucks up some energy, but you will see it improve greatly with time (especially more time in the saddle).  I see great things in your triathlon future!

Way to go!  Hell of a debut!  You did awesome!

Congrats on an impressive first triathlon with a AG hardware too!

Great race...it feels way different than we expect but learning and adjusting helps you execute the next one ever better.

You hooked?

Yes I am but I am spent. I secretly thought I was more than prepared but the run (which I thought would be my strong suit) was brutal. My last mile was 8:40 something. I have run several training runs much further and faster.

SUPER JOB!!! Congrats on the awesome placing, the swim was spectacular--really the whole race!

Not so much fitness, I think, but pacing and race execution ... and you'll absolutely pick that up quickly. You did AWESOME.
