Pre-race routine:

Actually got around 4.5 hours of sleep the night prior, more than I expected. Arrived early with my friends wife Jane. Arrived around 5 AM helped her get her tires inflated and then set up my area. After finishing we walked to a friends house near the swim start, dropped of a few things and headed to the race start.
Event warmup:

1.2 mile walk and about 10 minutes of swimming prior.
Swim
  • 42m 38s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 01s / 100 yards
Comments:

Didn't really find my stroke until I was about 80% of through the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Concentrate on my stroke earlier
Transition 1
  • 04m 18s
Comments:

Little slow, made sure to dry off feet and get all the sand off of them prior to putting on socks and shoes. Long run, 1/4 mile from swim finish to T1 area, on sand and bike trail. Stopped to get some sunscreen applied, really glad I did this.

Coming out of T1 running with bike and the front wheel catches on something, bike falls I jump over it and kick of my left armpad/rest bracket completely off the bike. Chain also gets hung up during this incident further adding to my fun.
What would you do differently?:

Be more careful and have better SA on my surroundings.
Bike
  • 2h 41m 55s
  • 56 miles
  • 20.75 mile/hr
Comments:

Bike went very well for me all things considered. Not having any arm brackets to use really did have an impact, and fixing chain took a minute as well. I was unable to use my other arm rest as I would be riding lopsided if I used the one still remaining on the bike. I do have the flip up type arm rests and so I was able to rest my forearms on the base bar and still get into the aero position. I could only hold this position for about 1/2 mile before I had to switch over to using my road bar drops. My fore arms would hurt, and they are bruised today, and my back would start to tighten up due to being about 2 inches lower than normal.

Aid stations were a little to far apart on a day this hot. I went about 5 miles without liquids waiting for the last aid station.
What would you do differently?:

Not break my arm bracket off.
Transition 2
  • 03m 21s
Comments:

Had taken my bike gloves off and put them in my pockets to save time in T2, forgot to take them out of my pockets.

Stopped to go to the bathroom as well, probably added about 30 seconds.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to take gloves out of pockets so I wouldn't have to run with them the entire race.

Long run to run start.
Run
  • 2h 08m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 46s  min/mile
Comments:

Really hot at this point. Heat really affected my performance, slowed down and just kept chugging along. Walked a few times for about a total of 2-3 minutes. Also got two huge blisters which were really painful.

Rained, really hard, for about 5 minutes, helped to cool me off, but the sun came right back and the humidity went sky high as the water baked off.
What would you do differently?:

Not much considering the conditions.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a lot of fluids and grabbed some food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heat, didn't affect me so much on the bike, but on the run it really did impact my time. Probably cost me anywhere from 30-40 secs per mile, based on training times for similar distances.

Event comments:

Good race, very well organized.

Losing the use of your aero bars must have really been rough. I remember how tired my arms used to get racing with my road bike. Great job out there!  We were cheering for you.
