gts - 2010-07-20 12:52 PM If you do decide to use a gel, tape just the top part to your bike up by the head tube, then when you pull it off it will already be open!  I use electrical tape.

It seems like this is the popular way to do this, but I must be missing something.  I tried it once and the tape came off with the gel.  I ended up with a sticky mess (both the tape and the gel).  Maybe a dumb question, but does anyone have a picture of this?  As I said, I must be missing something pretty basic here!

I LOVE the electrical tape method. I tried it for a century earlier this year, because the gels wouldn't fit comfortably in my smallish bento with my phone and other stuff, and I'll never go back to using the bento for nutrition. I like that the tape rips the top off the gel so I don't have to use my teeth, and I love that I don't need to have the bento on my top tube during a race.

I used to tape gels for races but recently bought a bento that I've been using on training rides and I like it a lot. I won't be taping again.

Make sure you wrap the tape all the way around the top tube so it wraps onto itself. Not just enough to hold the Gel tab.

Also, electrical tape works good, but I use 100mph tape...it's MUCH stronger and will never tear away from a Gu or any other packet....

Google it....it's the best general tape ever. Kind of like Duct tape but not as industrial.

I find that electrical tape can get kinda' gooey.  But, it will do the job.  Just don't leave it on there very long.  Take it right off after race day.

Gloves-  I leave them velcroed to my bike.  Then, I put them on during the first mile of the ride.  So, it takes almost nothing away from my time.  It's not so much a comfort thing as a piece of protective gear.  I've gone down without gloves and still have scars on my palms.

ok....dumb question here. . . what do you do with the empty gu packet after you've used it?

It got quiet!

What do I do with the gel packet?  I don't want it in my jersey or tri top pocket.  That's for sure.

I've got an aero drink on my bars.  It's got a slotted lid, and I just roll my gel pack up and stick it in there.  Toss it, when I get home.

nc452010 - 2010-07-20 12:59 PM I'm following along Daniel's path (no cycling shorts - just tri shorts, first).  I don't wear gloves for any of my rides, any more.

Just be careful not to fall, my friend. Gloves are as much about protecting my hands in the event of a fall as they are for comfort while riding. If you haven't already experienced it, let me assure you, picking gravel out of chewed up palms is not fun.

Dave

I was about to post something like this, but you beat me to it.  It might be worth risking no gloves for a race, but any other time, wear 'em.  I unfortunately know what Dave is talking about.

Dan

x3.  Since my first major crash...I always wear gloves and a long sleeve compression shirt on any training ride.

Road rash is not fun.  I'll do anything to prevent it or keep the severity of it lower.

ETA: I of course don't use long sleeves during a race...but I will consider using gloves on during a race if I can master putting them on while on the bike.  I can shove them in my back pocket of my tri jersey after T2 so I don't lose any time.

As mentioned before...it has nothing to do with grip or comfort...it's all about skin protection.

Me, too.  As much as it seems silly to try to pull on bike gloves.  I crashed during one tri, and had I not had gloves on (it happened to be really cold, otherwise, I would have never worn them), my race would have been over as well as my training for a while after.

Yes to the electrical tape of the gel to the top tube thing.  I do it when I'm only taking one gel during a race (typically for an Oly), but I've also done it for IM and IM training rides where I have a couple more gels on board than fit in my bento box if I include a Clif or Luna Bar in there.

Gloves on all training rides and IM/HIM for me, for the reasons cited.  Not interested in ending my day at an IM because I tore up my hands in a crash.  And I'm not fighting for a podium spot at those races, so I'm happy with taking 5 seconds to get the gloves on.  For sprints and Olys, though, where I usually AM fighting for a podium spot in my AG, I take my chances with no gloves...deciding factor was missing out on AG Nationals by 2.8 seconds at the SW Regional last summer where I wore my gloves.

I stick it in the leg of my tri suit. I usually forget about it until I take my suit off after the race.

I stick the empty gel packets until I get back to transition or the next aid station.

i use painters tape (blue tape) and it works fine with no sticky mess (for the gu packets)
gu wrapper ends up in my tri top pocket until races is over, unlike a large percentage who just throw them on the ground.. unfortunate..

That's one of the primary reasons I don't use gels. I've got a Hammer Gel bottle that I use on some training rides but the age old question of where trash goes doesn't come up with that, the bottle goes home with me.

tri808 - glad your back in the saddle again !

I sometimes wear gloves in Tri's....maybe not for sprint, but Oly or greater. I like the comfort.
To put them on fast, I have the glove rolled over (like socks) and they go on quick.

I leave them on for the run, I forgot once, and just decided it was ok just to leave them on.

Daniel:

I have that bottle, too.  The problem is twofold:  1.  Where to put it on my bike (convenience)  & 2.  You have to put more in the flask than you need, or it won't come out.  That's a wasteful PITA (IMO).

Love the concept.  Hate the reality.

There are several different bike mounts that allow you to place a gel flask on the top tube or stem.  Some even angle the flask down so that the gel is by the valve, addressing the second issue.

1) Velcro it to the top tube.
http://www.thetriathletestore.com/detail.aspx?ID=1098

2) It doesn't go bad. There's nothing to keep you from taking it from the race and using it on your next training ride

I thought of this AFTER I posted.....lol.  You and Shane are, undoubtedly, right.  User error.  So far, I'm only running sprints (no gels).  I only use them (and, ONE) on my training rides.  So, having/needing more than one hasn't been an issue (to make me figure out the flask).

My tri top has pockets in the back.  that's where the garbage goes until after the race.  I haven't found that the extra 5g slows me down.

Sorry for the late response,....I just saw this.

I roll up the packet with one hand and my mouth and then stick it in the leg of my tri suit so that it doesn't spew gel after that. I never notice it after that.

I also sometimes stick one in the leg of my tri suit for the run just in case. I do that before the race starts. I have never used it in an Olympic or a sprint.

x2 or if I'm not using the aero drink bottle, then in the leg of my tri shorts.
