I'm not sure if anyone's posted this link, but my coach just sent it to me and it ROCKS!  You can plot any route anywhere in the US (I just tried the US) and get accurate mileage.

Use it for your runs or rides or even swims!!!

I love this thing!

I've been using it for a little while now. Some of the local pictures are good enough that I can measure the pathways in a nearby park. I also got lots of swimming distances from a lake I'll be vacationing at soon. Great tool!

that is so awesome! i did one of my running routes and it came out as 3.44. i'd done it in mapquest before and it was 3.5. very close! i will be using this, to be sure. my only gripe is that it only has streets. some of my runs go onto pedestrian path that sometimes doesn't go where the streets go, so i can't use it for that. still awesome. much faster than entering in intersections into mapquest!

Once you've got it set-up in the area that you want using the regular map, try clicking the satellite button.  This gives you a satellite picture of the same area, and then you can track from there.  I can see the exact path I use, my house, trees, etc.  The pictures aren't up to the minute (they can be 5 years old), but they should be good enough fro you to measure your path, or whatever else you want.

Decent site, I checked it out last week.  I think I prefer Map24.com though.  Maybe I just haven't played with this site enough.  With Map24.com you can input an address and it will zoom you to the location rather than having to scroll/zoom manually to find your starting point.  Also, you only need to single-click along your route.  Some things I liked about this site though - it's nice that it scrolls the map as you click along your route, and the aerial photos could be a useful feature if you can find the trails and other off-road places where you train.  I just measured my morning run with both sites and ended up .05 miles difference over a 4 mile track...well within the error limits of my clicking I'm sure.

Aw, crap, my regular 5k route is only 4.79k. Now I'll have to start this training plan all over from the beginning!

This is awesome! I've been using a paper map with a string that I marked with the scale for one mile. I spent an entire sick day creating new routes just a couple weeks ago. If I had this tool then, I could have actually rested instead! This is soooo much easier and faster - thank you!

In the previous thread with that link I recommended Google Earth.

Yes, you have to download a program, which then uses the Internet connection to grab map data, but I think the measurement tool is much easier to use and the interface is much more convenient. All measurements are done on satellite maps/photos.

I found the dining and other data that can be overlaid on the map helpful for trip planning as well.

Your millage may vary.

I tried, but the log form won't take 4.795662670907664 K as an input. If my calculations are correct, and I'm fairly certain that they are not, this pedometer is measuring in units two steps below millimeter -- either micrometer or nanometer. I mean, I'm all for being precise in our measurements, but this is just silly.

Still cool, though.

This is completely off-the-tri-topic...

  • .. but if you like Google Earth there is a vibrant user community that uses the software to share interesting places around the globe:

You can also import your GPS data either directly from the GPS unit or via a .GPS & .LOC files and plot it on the terrain. No elevation profiles, though. Not yet, anyway. But for that you can use http://www.gpsvisualizer.com

BTW, Keyhole is what Google Earth used to be known as before Google bought it and started giving it away for free.

Don't get me started about this software. I think it's fantastic. If anyone has any questions, PM me and I'll do my best to answer.
