Who's racing this year?  I think I'm going to do the International.  I was reading the thread from last year, and talking to a buddy about it.  Beyond the heat...solid race?  Everyone still anticipate the problems with rocks and other sharp objects on the swim?

New swim start/finish so that won't be a problem. Going to be using the boat ramp this year, so should be all good in that aspect.

The other problem last year was traffic control with cops missing at a few intersections(I had to stop at a light for a good little bit). They had a meeting with the League City Council just a week or two ago, and sounds like things will be under more control this year. But we can only hope there. League City has a bad rep with supporting races.

Otherwise it's a fast race with a little bit of heat.

Last year I got gashed by something in the water about 100 yards offshore and it required 8 stiches and 2 months to heal.  even though I got injured i still finished, on the bike hit 2 highway intersections where I had to stop and wait for the light (dangerous and not fun) and had to walk the run due to the injury; I won't ever swim in Clear lake again (too much debris).  Make sure you get a tetnis shot after the race, you will want to once you learn what those cool pockets in the water are from...

smilford - 2010-07-23 12:24 PM  The other problem last year was traffic control with cops missing at a few intersections(I had to stop at a light for a good little bit).

The big problem intersection last year was where the olympic and sprint courses merged back together. The cops had the intersection cleared for the sprint folks that were turning right onto FM-270 but did not have the intersection cleared for the olympic folks going straight through the intersection.  I damn near killed myself and my bike.  There were about six of us that had to slam on the breaks when we realized the intersection wasn't under control.

There was also that section of road (FM-646) that was the worst patch of road that I have ever rode on. I thought my bike was going to rattle apart.

They also didn't do a good job at the dismount line because I got hit by the numbnut behind me who was still riding about 15 feet after the dismount line.  I guess he planned to ride all the way back to the bike rack until he hit me.  I ended up with two broken toes as my foot went into his front wheel. Remember when you would put baseball cards in your spokes as a kid?  Think of my toes as the baseball cards.  Still ran the 10K since my foot went numb and I couldn't feel the pain.  I paid the price for that decision for about two months afterwards.

Not sure if I'm going to do the race this year.

Chose Clear Lake to do my first sprint triathlon since around '95.   Just hoping to survive the swim.  The bike and run distances shouldn't be an issue.  Swimming in Clear Lake should be interesting...

I'm in...it'll be my first Oly. Kinda worried about the heat though. It is difficult for me to push very hard when I'm worried about dying from heat stroke.

Yea, I will. I just set my goal for what I'm capable of doing then add ~20% to account for the heat.

I think you will be surprised how well you might do.  I don't think the heat will slow you down as much as you think - certainly not 20%.  I assume you're training in hot weather already so you will be okay. The swim is fast for a non-wetsuit swim since Clear Lake is salt water and you get the extra buoyancy. The bike is very flat with the exception of the one trip over the Kemah Bridge.  I barely trained last year and rode 21 mph for the bike.  The only time the heat bothered me last year was the two miles of the 10K run.  Otherwise I didn't really notice it.

I'll be there, sprint distance will be my third and probably final race of the season, triathlons anyway.  Not sure if I am going to do the Wurst Tri in New Braunsfels in Sept. yet but it looks like a fun race.

Good luck

Hi, I'm still new to the sport but I'm going to try this one.  This is my first season and Clear Lake will be my third race.  I'd love to make some contact with others in the Houston area who do this sort of thing.  I can use all the advice I can get.

There are numerous tri clubs around town.  HRTC: http://www.houstonracing.com, Lonestar Multisport: http://www.lonestarmultisport.org and BAM: http://www.bayareamultisport.com to name a few.  HRTC is Houston, LSM is The Woodlands and BAM is Clear Lake/Galveston area.  I wish there was something more centrally located for folks out in Cypress or Katy.

It won't let me register, log in or contact the administrator.  Anybody had any issues registering?  It doesn't say it's sold out.

I am doing the sprint. It is my first race since IM Texas 70.3 where I got sick the Thursday before lost 11 lbs and still tried to race. It didn't go too well I was still sick at the start but got thru the swim and half the bike and just didn't have anything left. It was very tough on me being the first time I DNF. I wasn't going to race anymore this year but a buddy wanted to do one together so I agreed. Problem isI have been lazy since April. I missed racing and I am looking forward to it, just hope to get my big butt in shape by then.

This will be my first tri.  I'm doing the sprint.  One of my buddies from DFW is coming down to do it too.  Only goal is to kick his back side.  Well and finish of course.

For those who have done this one previously how is the traffic in and out typically?

The traffic was terrible getting into the parking area.  Leaving wasn't as bad since people leave at different times.

I carpooled (3 racers) and we drove straight to parking, no issues at all.  My husband showed up right before the race started and had no issues either.

Not a fan. Better races out there, last year made me not want to ever come back. To many cut corners on safety.

There was no excuse for not having some of the intersections blocked for traffic last year.  I'm not sure if it was a miscommunication between the RD and the police or if they were trying to run the race on the cheap.  I'm still baffled the cops were directing traffic the way they were in the intersection where the oly and sprint races merged together.  The sprint racers were making a right turn, therefore, there was no need to block traffic on that far side of the intersection since they were never crossing a road. Us folks on the oly were actually going through the intersection and had no one directing traffic on our side.  I'm very surprised no one got really, really hurt there.  It cost me about $60 for a new rear tire since I left a skidmark about 30 feet long once I realized I was about to go through an uncontrolled intersection.  I literally skidded all the rubber off the area of my tire that was contacting the rode.  Thankfully, it didn't pop the tube and I was able to finish but my heart rate must have been about 220 bpm.
