Subject: Weight training and Tri training?
So I used to lift 3-4 X week along with core body (abs, pull/push ups etc) 4-5 X week. This is when I was only running so I had plenty of time to work it in. Now that I have added biking and swimming into the equation, I find myself pressed to weight train at all. Am I missing added benfits in any of the sports by dropping it?  I still do core  body work at least 3 times a week, but that's all. I feel like I am in better shape, granted Im sure I can't bench as much now as I could 2 months ago. Thoughts? Should I make an effort to include some form?

Thanks!

I've heard people on here say that they still do core and upper body weight training, but find it difficult to do much with legs during training season.  Many will slow that down, i.e. maybe just do some squats, etc. during training and get back to it in the winter.  I like this idea.  I find heavy weight training on the legs thrashes my legs for run & bike training because there is not enough time to repair the muscle before I'm back out running and biking.

I'm by no means a veteran of tri, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt...

Well stated. The leg workouts go for me during the season since they make hills and hard intervals more painful- I do make sure I get some good hard bike efforts on short steep hills to keep up some strength. I then do core work and combined muscle lifts, usually dips and pullups twice a week. Off season I start back at the regular weight routine.

I do core work, and some leg work, just because you run doesn't mean you use all your leg muscles, and strengthening them through lifting can help. I dont go big weights, but high rep.

I also do chest and bicep work, but that's mainly because my wife doesn't want me to have a flat chest.  She's the boss...

Depends on your goals and your philosophy. I haven't been lifting too hard while training for races, but I still lift. As far as core training is concerned, I keep it up for 10-15 minutes/day at least five days a week.

No.

That depends entirely on your goals.  If your goals are to be a better triathlete, then it is unnecessary.  But you have other reasons for wanting to include it in some form, as many do.
