Subject: how to run a sub 20 minute 5K
So I won't have a road bike for 2 weeks while I wait for my new wheels (american classic 420s with sapim cx-rays - woo hoo) anyway I will focus on running only (and strength training). I really want to bring my current 22 min 5k down to as close to 20 as possible as I try and figure out how to run a sub 20. Any advice or references?

There's a really good article here:

http://www.slowtwitch.com/mainheadings/longrun/fastrun.html

If that doesn't work, go to http://www.slowtwitch.com and then click on "The Long Run" over to the right, in the middle of the screen.  The article is called "How to Kill - Your 10K PR."

My cousin was able to Shave 5 minutes of her personal best time using patches called . And she is a serious Triathlete, so you can appreciate how difficult that should be. The patches are also used by Sean May, and a number of olympic athletes, I use them, and can honestly tell you that they are legit. If you want to talk about it more, let me know.

Whoa energy patches? I'm going to hunt down those clinical trials and find a way to discredit them.

Several years ago Runner's World published a useful article on the "by the numbers" program. It worked well for me until I ultimately got injured from it, but I was going for an ambitious goal. I believe they have a 20-minute 5K program, so you may want to track down info on it. Good luck.

I'm sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm obsessed. I just looked over Lifewave's website and looked over their "clinical trials." It seems to me that they market it with a lot of scientific buzzwords that don't actually make sense in this case. Plus, I looked at their patent application and it says things completely different from their website. It's amazing what arguments a con artist with a semester of organic chemistry can come up with.

The clinical trials are extremely vague, not peer reviewed, and show no data. They do not even reference any of the scientific "studies" they mention in the text. They could easily have been manufactured, and it appears that the two universities Lifewave claims to have been involved in the studies deny any association with the company.

Even if the patches work, Lifewave says they have no idea of a mechanism. This, of course, means that there is no information about whether the devices are safe. No worries though--I suspect that safety information is excluded because it's all a lie. I don't see any scientific evidence for Lifewave being legitimate....oh, but here's a HUGE PILE of evidence that says it's a scam. I'm done hijacking now.

You want to go from 4:24 per km to 4:00 minutes per km.  That is merely a 10% increase in speed but what an increase!  At this level, you had best consult a coach.  He, or she, can best draft up a training plan that will help you achieve this goal.  I would assume that your training plan would consist of a lot of speed work on the track.

I can't reliably run a 22 min 5K just every once in awhile when I am pissed off.

All they have done is scientific research, and double blind studies. I agree with you to be skeptical, but their claims do not come from no where, and they are approved by the FDA to be ok for Olympic athletes and NCAA athletes to use. You can actually download that document.

There's a plan for you Charles ... get into a raging fight with your wife/girlfriend/other until you are really pissed off.  Then, do some speed work at the track.  That should do it!

Their reported 34% increase in performance in 3 days is a little hard to believe. If it were true, we should be seeing some 3-minute miles any day now. And I'm pretty sure that FDA approval doesn't mean anything. They are approved as bandages, which is fine because they are adhesive patches that don't do anything. And I could make up a fake double blind study right now that would look more authentic than their reports.

Approved by the FDA? Are the patches considered to be a drug? Medical device? drug sdelivery system? What's the registration number? How about the NDA number? I'd love to look these things up on the FDA site.

Wow...I actually found them on the FDA site. They are registered as "disposable heat packs." That means these things are approved to make our skin warm. It seems like the claims made on the Lifewave website exceed what they are approved by FDA to do. It's very, very illegal to claim in advertising .that an FDA-approved product does something it's not approved to do.

I don't have much to offer about how to train for a faster 5k (except the obvious, more speed work) but I can tell you how to run faster on race day: Run fast! Seriously, get a very good warmup (at least 5k) and just hammer as hard as you can from the gun. You should be barely hanging on for the entire race, one step from puking. You'd be amazed how much faster you can go just by being willing to suffer incredibly.

Oh yeah, those Lifewave things sound like a crock of shit.

If you figure out a way to drop your time by 2 minutes, please let me know (patch - free).  It has taken me years of running the same 23:39 5K to finally run a 23:06 at my last 5k, and I was psyched.  I've been doing alot of strength work, speed work and plyometrics.   Just be careful with trying to reach an ambitious goal too quickly-can be a recipe for injury!  Good luck.

Ooh here's another idea. Do a 10K training program, but then double-cross the program and run a 5K instead. You'll be more than fit enough for the 5K, so you won't run out of steam as quickly.

I went to that site now and it is now bookmarked in my Timewaster folder (don't worry, the kewlest stuff goes there, like illwillpress.com if you ever get a chance to listen to the flash of "Fatkins Diet" do it. I literally scream with laughter). I love that site now. Of course anything Penn and Teller approved gets a big ole thumbs up from me.

actually it was "get into a raging fight with my wife, her girlfriend and other..."

I like the slow twitch article I have been doing a lot of track work and lactate threshold. I'll keep everyone updated - oh yeah I'll start using a hrm with a stopwatch on the same screen. my current hrm has current hr and to get to the stop watch you have to push buttons - not easy when you are trying to stay at peak hr.

Alright, its official. I pointed it out elsewhere, I'm doing it here. Tankimus is a spammer. In this thread and elsewhere he has tried to sell these patches:

Tankimus - 2005-07-15 11:10 PM

I cannot give you an experienced triathletes point of view, but I can offer you a point of view from an ex college football player, and serious sprinter. I was put on lifting programs and nutritional programs, monitored by doctors, and I never used ephedra or caffein products. I actually used something calle Lifewave patches. They work unbelievably well, and they don't interact with your body in the harsh way that stimulants like that do. Caffein puts your body into a sympathetic nervous response, which can affect your body's digestive and rest cycles. A sympathetic nervous response decreases your digestive process, your rest and digest cycle is a parasympathetic nervous system action. I have never personally known anyone to have any serious problems using stimulants, but Lifewave works better. I order them from www.lifewave.com/patchaid
(emphasis added)

So, how do we deal with this? I hate being sold to, but I really, really hate someone trying to scam me.

As for entertaining infomercials, I was once this close to buying a Torso Tiger. It just looked so . . . cool!

I have a lot of personal experience with supplements of this sort. I'm not sure that the claims that BioBuilde makes can be attributed as unique to their product. All amino acids are designed to help for faster recovery. They are the building blocks of protein, so if you ingest amino acids then it is like taking in pre-digested proteins, allowing them to quickly get to the muscles. I have usually used twinlab amino fuel which works fine in my opinion, and as far as stamina and energy during workouts, I think that lifewave patches are far better. I get them at www.lifewave.com/patchaid

I used lifeway patches for 2 weeks and now I'm 4.5 inches taller!  It's unbelievable.  It works!

I used to be 6 feet but thanks to lifeway patches I'm 6.45 feet tall!  I love this stuff.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that lifeway patches also dramatically improved my marriage and I also got a promotion at work!

THANKS LIFEWAY.  I couldn't have done it without you.

If you'd like to experience the same results just buy your Lifeway patches here:
