Subject: 2.5 Hour Bike or rest my sore Achilles/calf
Over the weekend I had to walk up and down a lot more steps than I'm used to. As a result I have pain half way between the bottom of my calf and the bottom of my foot. Somewhat higher than what I think of as the Achilles tendon area. I have been taking Ibuprofen and icing the area for the past two days. I have no problems walking but I can tell something is wrong in there.

Has anyone had this type of problem? Would you advise me to do my regular long bike ride?

You can tell that "something is wrong" and you're contemplating a 2.5 hour bike ride? Rest, or at least a shorter ride so you can circle home if you need to. Why risk further injury?

If you feel like something's wrong, skip the ride (or do a shorter, EZ ride). If it's just soreness from doing something you're not used to doing, you'll get over it quickly and the ride probably wouldn't do any further damage. But, it sounds like it's more than general soreness.

Massage the area that hurts too. If you don't have The Stick or anything, just get into that spot that hurts with your thumbs or a knob or something.

Rest!  Biking aggravates my achilles more than running does!

I think this is referred to as non-insertional achilles tendonosis, or something like that. I have it and it sucks.
If you can, take at least a week off from running. I used high-incline treadmill walking to keep my muscles happy, and that seemed to help.

I saw a podiatrist..he wanted me to get orthotics, but said he couldn't tell me if it was related to the tendon problem.

Ibuprophen and Ice are two things that will make it feel better in the short term, but will slow the healing process.  healing requires blood flow, and those reduce blood flow.

If you do ice- then do warmth right afterwards, with movement and gentle stretching.  Let pain be your guide and keep it moving as much as you can.

I pulled my calf last week.  No running for the week ....my bike is on the trainer and I will get off with any pain.....no ibuprofen, no stick per my favorite PT.....compression stockings as much as possible....
