Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 5/8
Pre-race routine:

I should have know it was going to be that kind of day when I woke up and realized that I had overslept by 30 minutes. Got up, took the dog for a walk, woke up Cindy, grabbed a bagel w/ peanut butter, some water, loaded up the van and headed to the race.
Event warmup:

Not too much time available for any kind of a warmup, they started the course talk when I was setting up in transition.
Swim
  • 40m 16s
  • 1575 yards
  • 02m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had some "problems" after about the first 200yds in the water and had to have a mental time-out and re-group. Finished the swim pretty strong though but it was slow overall.
What would you do differently?:

The suggestion of trying to get in the water a little prior to the start of the race sounds like a good idea.
Transition 1
  • 03m 46s
Comments:

Long run from the water to the transition area. No problems. Just making sure that I make smooth transitions. Not too worried about the speed right now.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing different
Bike
  • 1h 18m 12s
  • 25 miles
  • 19.18 mile/hr
Comments:

Not too bad. A little quicker than my previous race but similar to what I have been training at. Used two gels today, probably could have used another one and drank more during the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Still want to slow down a little so that I can save something for the run.
Transition 2
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Same as T1
What would you do differently?:

Same as T1
Run
  • 58m 10s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 09m 23s  min/mile
Comments:

Again, not too happy with the run. Need to work on my bike-run legs.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate some fruit and bagels and drank a lot of water and gatorade. Sat with BMAX, her brother and future sister in law and just had nice conversation waiting for Cindy to finish up with her volunteer duties.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just need more work in all areas.

Event comments:

Not sure if I will do this event again next year unless the primary road is repaired or they re-route the course.

Other than the swim (and thanks for sharing your experience--it will help us all), I think your times look great. 19+ MPH on the bike is fantastic. You said you wanted to run faster, but you finished in less than an hour so good for you!

I'd bet a lot of money that the swim leg was long. Even with your 'freak,' your time says it was.

Regardless, congrats!

Good job on the race.  Bike to run is always tough, especially when you've been pushing on the bike.

Excellent JOB! Sorry about the hiccup in the swim, but you pulled it together and that's amazing!

Way to hang in there on the swim Mark! You did great considering the lousy road and the longer than usual swim.
I would love to have a sub 60 minute 10K.
Nice to talk with you and we enjoyed your company.
Hopefully see you next week at Racine to cheer Cindy on.
