TG Multisport Club

Overcast
Total Time = 1h 24m 16s
Overall Rank = 54/169
Age Group = 30-39
Age Group Rank = 5/30
Pre-race routine:

Awake at 0430 and on the road from North Vancouver by 0500. Who knew the drive to Langley would only be 40 minutes that early on a rainy Sunday morning?!
Event warmup:

Warm-up?! It was more a case of sorting out my gear in transition and trying to work off the pre-race nervous energy!!
Swim
  • 16m 4s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 08s / 100 meters
Comments:

Overall a better swim than last year. Typical 750m time is 15 minutes on a training swim. After last years race and the 'bottle necking', I opted to seed myself with a slightly faster group. Faster seeding worked well and I did not find myself slowed down on the swim. Shaved 30 seconds off last years swim!
What would you do differently?:

Would seed myself with a slightly faster group again.. it worked well!!
Transition 1
  • 01m 59s
Comments:

Added 6 seconds to transition from last year. Different shoes, socks and location in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Preplan the socks and shoes. Explore use of bungee laces.
Bike
  • 38m 20s
  • 18 kms
  • 28.17 km/hr
Comments:

Rode a hybrid last year.. this year was on my road bike. Still fairly new to road biking.. but fairly comfortable on the bike. Took 6min 18 seconds off my O/A ride time from last year! Pretty happy about that development!!
What would you do differently?:

Start cycle training earlier in the spring... with friends that are prepping for Ironman... that and perhaps finally graduate to my clipless pedals & shoes :)
Transition 2
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Slower transition than last year. Felt solid, but apparently it was 'slow' :)
What would you do differently?:

Better transition mat layout. Forget donning a shirt for the run phase.. and finish out the race in my tri-suit. Not worry about the rain & wetness on my gear...

Run
  • 26m 28s
  • 5 kms
  • 05m 17s  min/km
Comments:

Solid run, but slower than last year. Added 36 seconds to last years run time. Overall it was a consistent run.. just slower than I would have preferred.
What would you do differently?:

Work to pursue fellow athletes.. attempt to 'pace chase'..
Post race
Warm down:

A gentle jog was the extent of my warm-down. Didn't feel overly exerted on completion of the race. As an friend noted.. it is likely due to the fact I've been training at Oly to HIM levels for the summer :) Realized a week out.. I'm comfortable pursuing any of the 3 disciplines for my approximate sprint race time :)

Very inspirational indeed! Nice job on whacking a whole bunch of time off the bike ride. Ya gotta be pretty proud of a 5/30 AG placement. Well done!

Wow! Over 6 minutes off last year's bike time, impressive! You're going to be a serious threat once you don the clipless pedals and shoes.
Great report and very impressive times in all three disciplines. I'm sure you'll make top three in you AG next year.
Great report and keep up the good work, your're getting better all the time.

Congratulations on your great race!

I was drawn to your race report because of the "Walnut Grove" title-- big Little House on the Prairie fan here.

Thanks for the congrats and support... Changing bikes, training on the North Shore and doing a few rides with a friend training for IMC later this month definitely paid off...

Started wetsuit shopping... as I'm seriously considering entering the Vancouver Tri 2010 in early September...

Wetsuit and aero-bars.. are pretty much the last 2 pieces of 'essential' kit.. i think?! :P

Great report! As Riel said, with those new pedals and kicks you'll be colleccting A/G medals in no time! Shaving 6 mins off the bike is epic and you must feel proud of the progress. If only I could get my pedals going faster...

You really should come out forthe Vancouver Tri in September, I believe Riel and I are feilding a relay for that one. We did not finish last year so we're out for redemption this time around. It's a good race with a great atmosphere.

I guess I should write my report for Walnut Grove now too...
