Y'all are a bunch of slug-a-beds.

I'm in bed by 10:00 and wake up at 3:00 every day, weekends, holidays, weekends, whatever.

It keeps me on a regular schedule and I can do both morning and afternoon workouts.

I wake up at 4:15 5-6 days a week and go to bed at 10sh. I don't think you're crazy.

Add me to the early morning crew...up at 4am to get workouts in--so actually 4:45 would be sleeping in for me!  I go to bed when my girls do--8:30ish.  It's what works for me!

I did the before work thing for a while.  It was fine, and if you've got to be to work at 8, it's real easy to get in an hour.  I do feel pretty good after working out in the morning though, and as an added bonus, it's much, much cooler than after work (like in the 30-40F range).

Then I changed to getting in at 7, and watching the kid after work till the wife gets home at 9-10.  No way I could get in an hour of working out, 30-45min getting ready, 10min of commute time, and enough sleep to survive now

I get up at 4:00 or 4:30 every day and work out.  Never had a problem until the Owl attacked me on my 4:00 run this week.  Different thread...

I wake up between 4:15-4:30 each morning and spend an hour or so drinking coffee and trying to wake up before I work out.

To me, "too early" is before 3:30.

I think it may take some trial and error to find what works, but it may take a week or two to actual have a fair go at getting up early.
I'm glad I read this. I knew there was something very wrong with me last year when I got up every Tuesday at 3:15am to get in a brick and a swim before 7:45am work. I'm not sure I even know who that girl is.
For me if the alarm starts with a "4" I can swing it. It looks a lot less intimidating after a while.
Bonus- when your colleagues ask you "When do you ever find the time to work out?" They'll think the alarm time is even more impressive than the workout specifics.

I think any earlier than 4:30 is too early in my opinion...

Sleep 45 more minutes.  Ditch the stretching.

Eat in the car on the way to work.  I take an apple, banana, nuts, water, and coffee on my 30-40 min commute.  Sometimes sandwiches.  Come winter I'll be wanting hot oatmeal, but not sure how to eat it while driving....

Stretching for 30 minutes? I can hardly imagine a worse torture than 30 minutes spent stretching. Move, hold for 30 seconds, move, hold for 30 seconds. Waterboarding would be more pleasant. Yes, I said that.

Ten minutes a day is good enough for anybody.

Also a teacher -- first bell rings at 7:15am.  During my school year I pack everything the night before (I find that's really key for me -- I even put it in the car) and can get up at 4:30 and be in the pool by 5am since the gym is near my house.  I pack my breakfast as well and eat in front of my students -- I rationalize this by thinking it's good for them to watch somebody eat a healthy breakfast instead of a poptart or donut.  It does mean I'm usually in the bed by 9pm but I'm so exhausted by then that I fall asleep within seconds and sleep like a log.  I don't know that I'd ever feel comfortable biking or running in the dark by myself in the mornings, but going to the gym to swim or do a treadmill run has worked fine.  It's definitely a habit -- so in this first week back to school it is taking some tough self-talk when the alarm goes off to get out of bed.  Biking has to wait for the weekend for me during the school year, especially when the time changes.

Another 4:30 AM teacher, here. I'm usually out the door or on the trainer about 10 minutes after the alarm, though, no snack first.

Life is busy (teaching, family, kids' activities)...I do it whenever I can. Sometimes 6 am sometimes 6 pm. Sometimes 9:30 at night. If I check off all of my workouts by the end of the week, that's all that counts for me.

rbishop01 - 2010-08-13 4:49 PM My alarm goes off every day (except Sunday) at 4:25 AM. I could see possibly doing 4 AM but no earlier. I am always in bed by 9:30-10:00.

Wow, This sounds like I wrote it.  I get up at 4:25 every day, with 6.5-7 hours of sleep.  Some mornings I have gotten up at 3:45 to get some longer training in.  I'm a teacher and the school day starts pretty early, 7am.

I'm another early bird.  Up at 4 am every morning if not earlier (cat has been pulling my hair at 3:15ish lately).  Some nights I crash early and some nights I'm up later, whatever the body tells me.  Of course, though, I have no kids and my job is extremely flexible.  Getting up early to work out does take some getting used to.

In regards to the studies mentioned earlier.  I notice that I DO perform better when I work out in the afternoon; however, I'm mentally better in the morning.

I have to be at work at 6:30 so my alarm is set between 3:30 and 3:45 during the week depending on my workout

3AM here Monday thru Friday.  Out the door by 3:20 for a two hour ride.  10-15 mins of ab work.  Shower and at the office at 6:45AM.  I do this M-Friday.  Some days I make it 3:30 wake up.  Depends on what my training day consist of.  When I am not doing 2 hour rides I will get to the YMCA 1.5 hours before it opens knock out a run and then swim.  I always try to get my workouts done in the AM before work.   I am in bed sleeping by 9PM most nights.  Weekends I start my day at 6:45AM.  As has been mentioned, if you get use to a routine stay with it. People look at you cross eyed but what ever works for you go for it.

3 AM?!  Yikes. But whatever works for you.

I had a job assignment last summer where I had to wake up at 4:30 am to be at work at 6 am.  It made me into a complete b!tch.  It was torture, and I applied for a transfer. No one makes me get up at 4:30 am. Tongue out

Now I get up at 6 am for work and work out in the evening.  DH, who's a night owl, thinks I'm crazy.

Personally, in that schedule, I'd eliminate the eat and the stretch and sleep until 5. (Which is what I do... and get to work around 7:15)
