Subject: More dangerous than motorcycling?
I did my first tri this weekend at Donner Lake and when I came back to the finish line, my boyfriend had tears in his eyes. Turns out, it was only half from pride. The other half was in assisting with a situation in which one of my fellow athletes nearly lost his life in the water. After my race, we went to the hospital to see if we could help the families in any way and we learned the guy was in ICU and hadn't woken up. My boyfriend is a motorcycle racer and now he understands why I freak out when the course is red flagged and I can't see him. It didn't one occur to him that what I was doing might be dangerous. http://www.kolotv.com/news/headlines/1705002.html
When I was in the water, I heard the airhorn and saw the Seadoo, but I had no idea there was a serious situation going on. I can't tell if I'm glad I didn't know, or I wish they would have done more to alert us.

I think you'll find that these things happen when you are living a life that goes beyond sitting in front of the TV- no matter what the activity.  It doesn't diminish the seriousness or sadness of the situation, but it happens nevertheless.

This morning there was a big fatal accident on the freeway and my boyfriend said "ok, so things we can't do because they are dangerous--motorcycle, boat, swim, and drive". Clearly he was kidding, but it's true, when you live your life, rather than rot away, things do happen.

When I left the hospital, he was in ICU. There was this small article online today. I wish I'd learned more but what I can tell you is that the two guys that saved him happened to be his buddies and at first not one of them knew who any of the others were. It was total serendipity. The guy's wife lives in Roseville so she managed to get up to Truckee very quickly, thank goodness. Here is the article...http://www.kolotv.com/news/headlines/1705002.html

He wasn't wearing a wetsuit and I surmise the cold had something to do with it.
