No exercise for 10 days, dentists order. Pulled a tooth, and she said no strenuous activity for 10 days.

The eating is ok, had some incidents the last 2 weeks, a bit of chocolate here and a soda there, but overall i hover around 1300-1500 KCal/Day.

Weigh in tomorrow, hoping to have lost another 3-4 pounds this last week.

The (totally unsubstantiated) numbers I've heard that seem to make sense to me is that nutrition is going to account for about 80% of weight loss, and exercise the other 20%.  So - it sounds like you're headed in the right direction!

Hope the tooth (lack of tooth?) heals up quickly!

The lack of tooth is hurting like a #/&€#"!

Good thing is no food will be eaten, = less KCal. ;-)

3 pounds less than last monday. That's ok.

Great job!  I started off last March and could not run at all.  I did the couch to 5k program.  Now i can run a 10k.

The running barefoot is a good idea.  I ditched my regular shoes in May but i had to scale back my running to adjust.  I use the vibram 5 fingers now.  Another great way to train is to use a HRM.  Lots of info out there but the quick summary is that stay in your aerobic range and increase miles/distance.  You will burn fat and increase your endurance.  Also running at a lower heart rate allowed me to complete my runs even if very slow.  You will increase speed over time.  In July I was running at a 15min/mi pace at around 145-150bpm, now I can run 11min/mi in the high 130s.  Pain is no gain

Great links for running:

 http://trtreads.org/Articles_OWCO.html

I do some chi running.  The point of running barefoot is to have a forefoot or midfoot strike under the center of your body.  It reduces shock through the legs and up through the hips.

Good luck!

Okay i am in.  Cheers to our 'last first step'!! Smile

I have had a gym membership for 4 years. Not until this last August have I really done anything. I was 'roped' in to some personal training sessions. I really feel it is the best money I have spent on myself. I now look forward to going to the gym, mainly because I am not intimidated on what to do. Working with my PT has given me the structure and understanding of what to do while I am there. I have yet to check out the programs on here (BT). But the way you and some others praise them I am going to have to.

Ok Mrs Dork, i'll PM you and we can get crackin' on our new lifes!

Soo, it's been a while since i wrote here. Work is tough at the moment, 10 hour days days at the office + 90 minutes commuting to and from work each day. Then home and do all the stuff needed to be done at home.

i didn't get any exercise in this week, but the diet went well, and yesterday i weighed in 4pounds lighter than last monday. Broke the 130Kg wall, and i hope i never see it again!

Thanks for all the kind words and inspires, i'll try to pay you guys back by posting a bit more from now on.

Awhile indeed. How funny, I also work a nutty schedule like that. 10 hour days but my commute is only like 45 mins there and then 45mins home.

What doses PM stand for? I guess I am not hip enough to know.

I visited family over this past weekend. I was so taken back when my aunt made some potatoes hash brown and put... wait for it... LARD in the pan. I skipped the hash browns. And after seeing that I got less than half of what I truly wanted to put on my plate. Knowing how they were made just put it in my mind that all the other things were just made as 'badly' the hash browns! And I can only assume that is true because what I did eat tasted wonderfully...Wink

My commute is around 45 minutes to, i meant 90 minutes in total. :-)

PM would be Private Message.

No need to be afraif of the LARD, just not every day and in moderate quantities. Mmm.. Hash Browns...

So, how's the tooth feeling these days?  Are you released to be exercising again?

And - like we've said before - nutrition/diet is a much bigger factor in losing weight, especially at the beginning.  So - keep at it - sounds like things are going pretty well for you!

The tooth is doing great!

The exercise and diet went so so this week.

I was out running last tuesday, tried my new shiny Vibram FiveFingers for the first time. I managed a slow 3km jogwalk, and it felt AWESOME! I actually think i kinda enjoyed a few of the steps. A totaly new way of running.

The 4 days after that, not so much... My calves hurt like i never felt before. I have 19 steps from the second floor bedroom to the downstairs part of the house. Took me 5 minutes the first time i did it the morning after running.

I read that the VFF are hard on the calves the first times you run in them, but this was a bit unexpected. So no more running was done this week.

Had plans that i would run yesterday, but i didn't. :-(

Diet was crap to, fell back to the midnight snacking and other stupid habits.

Weighed in this morning and i gained almost a pound. Not to bad. just going to have to work harder this week.

See ya'll around!

Sounds like you're back on the right track -- and a bet will certainly keep things interesting around here!

And - the journey will have ups and downs... just persevere and re-commit when you get off-track a little.  Happens to the best of us!

Ok, Yoda mode off.

Crap week, no workouts worth mentioning, and crap food. Pizza and candy. Love the stuff, hate what it does to my body.

Gained 2 pounds this week.

(Side note:  Mmmm.... pizza.  I could live on pizza and ice cream...)

That said ... acknowledge the setbacks, maybe note how/why it happened to prevent it next time, and move on.  No sense in beating yourself up for something that's already in the past.

Make a new commitment for this week.  What are you going to accomplish?  How many workouts?  Schedule them in.  What are you going to eat?  Start planning your meals (forethought and planning always help me stay on track).  Take the initiative, stay positive and make healthy decisions.

You can do it!

(just a little tough love this Monday morning...)

Ok, so it turns out 500 minutes is a LOT of minutes!

Methinks i'll be a bit more conservative with my promises going forward. :-)

1 pound down this last week, and i'm amazed by that, i've hardly been working out and eaten a lot of crap. I just can't seem to get in the groove and consistently work out and mind the food.

One Year ago (October 1) I started a medically supervised weight loss program - I've lost 140, aiming to lose 40 more. I'm running 5K no problem, peeking at the 10K courses, biking 20 miles no problem. I am a very strong proponent for rapid weight loss to get the process started but the focus has to be on transition from rapid weight loss to learning new PERMANENT life changes.

Most instrumental tools leading to my weight loss:

- Kaiser Medical Weight Loss Program (Optifast and Group Therapy)
- Fit Soul Fit Body (book) by Brant Secunda and Mark Allen
- Omnivores Dilemma (book) by Michael Pollan
- Exercise 6 days a week.

Keep up the good work - this is a war that can be won!

Hey Flyboy,

I hope all is going well.  I am usually a lurker and your thread caught my eye.  Your story is not unlike mine.  This thread motivated me!  I am not sure exactly where I started several weeks ago I just know that I weighed 280 something (probably close to 285 -- I have seen 287) and started with small changes in my diet and a little walking.  For example, I might eat like I normally would all day except instead of eating cafeteria food (I am a HS principal) I would get a veggie delight at a very good vegan place right next door to the school.  That has transitioned into a little routine I do each day (2 sets of 25 crunches, 15 push ups, 15 toe touches and 15 windmills) before I shower.  I do 20 min dumbell routine 3 times a week (consists of 2 rounds of 3 sets of super sets) and walk/jog for 30 mins 3 times a week (did 2 miles in 23:56 today -- was at 33 mins when I started!).  I will add a 3rd round in the DB routine this week and kick up the walk/jog distance to 2.6 miles.  I have dropped a couple lbs. (or less) each week until this week where I have lost 5 or more.  It is getting easier to stick to a cleaner diet and make sure I find some "good" snacks during the day.  I let myself have some homemade choco pudding (with half the sugar replaced with sweetner) Friday night and did not set me back a bit.  I have concentrated on portion control as much as anything and not "drinking my calories" through soda, sweet tea and Monster Kaos (I love this stuff!!!!).

Flyboy -- keep it up man!  You and others who have commented on this thread have inspired to me to not only start back (again!!!), but to also stay with it and work more toward a life style change.  I feel better than I have in months/years and even got a 2 comments asking if I have lost weight!!

Keep going!

Keep fighting the good fight FlyBoy. You will get there in the end.

Another intersting point that I was told once... "Remember, you didn't put on this weight overnight. Don't expect it to come off overnight. Like the weight gain, the weight loss is most likely to be a process over years".

Not altogether inspiring but something to remember when things seem too big to overcome....

I've been at it 19 months now, only having weighed myself at the 12 month mark.  I had lost 52 in 52 weeks so my guess is I'm now down over 70.  The biggest change of the last two months has been that I am doing 2x a day workouts with greater frequency now, early AM and then early evening during the workweek.  I still log everything I eat on calorieking.com.  My endurance is up and I'm going six days a week now, averaging 500 minutes of exercise a week.  Pilates 2x, swimming, running and bike are the rotation.  Calorically I'm averaging 2300 cals a day.   I'd like to get below 200 but since I started at 300 that is something I'll think about next year once I weigh in at the 2 year mark.  It can be done, but having yo yo'd before, I am very wary to stay on top of it.  If I have a big weekend w friends, etc I will jump right back on the exercise wagon right after, and mind what I eat and drink during the weekends.   It will be a lifelong task to stay on top of this, but I've figured out a system that works for me at least.  Good luck to all that are on the same journey.  This site has provided invaluable help and support!

Hey all!

Thanks for the kind words.
Not doing such a great job the last 2 weeks though. Last night was a total binge fest. Gingerbread cookies, icecream, soda.. Went to bed feeling like crap.

Must_Get_Back_On_Track!

From now until next monday (12 days) i WILL workout 400 minutes and mind my eating.

Weigh in last monday was crap. 3lbs down, it's going so slow.

8 weeks since i started, and 22lbs down, i guess that's ok, but it doesn't feel ok. :-(

Fly boy - keep up the good work!  You have lost 22 pounds in 8 weeks - celebrate with a smoothie or something!

Do you realize at this pace (about 2.5 pounds per week on average) you will be at 200 pounds by July?!?!

Watch the bindging, I know that is my biggest battle.  Keep working out and best of luck.
