I am headed down to Austin to compete in my first OLY distance.  I am pretty psyched since I have heard lots of great things about this race.  Anyone headed down there  or competed in this one before? If so, any advice or coments on the race?

Thanks

I haven't done this one yet, but I've done the Capital of Texas Triathlon which covers much of the same course and I've done a lot of events by Jack and Adams/High Five Events.

The swim is the swim. Nothing too unusual about it. Depending on whether or not any of the spillways are open on the Longhorn Dam, there may be a slight current from left to right when looking at the course map.

Despite having 2 hairpin turns per lap, the bike course well probably be fast for two reasons. 1 - The pavement is for the most part very smooth. Sure, they'll be some bumps and repaired pot holes, but overall the surface is fast. 2 - Lots of competitors on an 8-mile loop means lots of opportunity to take advantage of draft zones as you pass people. You can easily slipstream from one person to another. The southbound leg on Congress Ave between Oltorf and the turn around will be up a pretty decent hill. Nothing crazy, but you'll be spinning for a little bit, especially compared to the rest of the course. You'll be flying coming back the other way, though.

The same is true on the little inset section of the course map that's in the lower left, the small section where you head north parallel to Loop 1. If you look at the elevation profile, that's the little hill at the 10k mark.

The run is a combination of road surface, sidewalk, and the hike and bike trail. The only hill to speak of will be when you turn left off Riverside on to South 1st. You'll climb a little bit as you cross the bridge. The rest of the run is going to be pretty flat.

Jack and Adams puts on great races. They're well run and a lot of fun. Post race is typically quite good.

I know i'm looking forward to it.  It's my first olympic as well.  I'm looking forward to be able to bike on the fast city roads.  I ride around on my rode bike through traffic and always wish i could ride them when the streets are closed off.

Should be a good time.  Also, looks like the temps may be a few degrees cooler than it has been.

I did it last year - was my first Olympic and I did a race report on it here on BT. Loved the course! Well, the swim was kinda gross, and the only other complaint I had was the transition area - about 10" of deep dirt, hard to run through and get the bike through. I was filthy afterwards. Oh, and one more thing - my wave didnt start until 8:40, so was super hot by the time I got to the run. Other than that, GREAT race!

It's going to be my first Tri as well as my first Oly.  Looking forward to it so very much indeed, been training hard and can't wait to see how it all pays off on the day itself.

So do we want to huddle up and make introductions on race morning? Or maybe meet up for lunch on Sunday during/after check-in?

I'm up for either.

I did the Olympic last year and it was a great race.  Doug has covered most of the basics.  Transition was pretty dusty last year but I never saw 10" deep dirt anywhere - I think that's some exaggeration.  It was a loooong way from swim-in to your rack to bike-out though.  Lots of running with the bike no matter where you are but it'll be good to be near the bike out (as usual).

The post-race last year was great - beer garden, lots of good food, awesome U2 cover band (front man looked just like Bono!).  My wife is doing the Sprint and I have a friend coming in from Albuquerque to do the Olympic.  I'll be on baby-duty, cheering from the sidelines with stroller in hand.  Wave and say hi to the guy hauling around the 6-month girl...that's me!

I won't be arriving until 3 pm on the Sunday so I'm sure I'll probably be rushing around to try and register and get my bike checked in on time.  A pre-race huddle though would be nice, would be great to put some faces to posters

Anyone else racing through Team Livestrong? I'll be wearing their team jersey and have this triathlon tattoo on my left thigh - if you see me, say hello!

I'm sure you'll be the only one and therefore easy to spot.

And dude, how do you get my name wrong?!?! We rode the Longhorn course together last year. I have Dennis the Menace as my avatar. If that's not enough, I SIGN MY POSTS! Sheesh! ;p

Doh!  My apologies, Dennis!  Not sure how that happened?  Maybe the 3:12 am timestamp is a clue.  Must stop drinking and BT'ing...

Haven't decided if I'll be rocking the BT gear or my standard, which is a black and gold top that says MessageOne on it. In either case, I'll be riding a custom painted green, white, and black Cervelo P3 with the Dennis the Menace graphics that make up my avatar on the downtube.

How did it go for everyone?  My race went pretty well, especially for my first Olympic.  I need to learn to slow the bike some, but its hard to go slower on the one sport that I am ok at.  I guess a tri is never going to be easy, but I need to work on the run so it isn't quite so hard.
While I don't like wet roads for u-turns and lot of corners, I wish it had stayed cloudy or rainy for the run!
Hope all went well for you.

It never gets easier, you just get faster!

Good race. I didn't let the rain bother me other than taking it a little easier on some of the turns. Had a great race. Run course was about .2 miles short, though. Even so, finished in 2:24:28 and I'm happy with that.

Looking forward to seeing where my individual splits placed me in my AG, but according to my Garmin, my bike split was 23.2 mph. Wheeeee!

That was a really fun race. LOVED THE RAIN! I was a bit freaked out about rain on the bike but it felt wonderful.

had a 18.4 mph bike split - yay!!! That's great for me, especially at that distance. Swim was 28 so that was great. Run however, well, I felt like dying and actually cried at mile 5. Ah well. I still can't understand that I can run a mile in 7:48 but couldn't run a 10k in an oly to save my life.... literally.. it was HORRIBLE. but for my first oly, I am happy!

What a great race!  This was my first OLY as well and  I was pleased with my time (2:43.43).  Since it was my first race at this distance I was a bit unsure so I made a point to take it easy in tranisiton and gather myself. I flew through the water (26:23) but I need to improve my bike  (1:18.25) and run (52:23).  The rain was a bit of a relief and I agree, I wish it would of kept up because on about mile 3 of the run that sun and humidity were a killer.  Not much left i nthe tank as I crossed the finish line.

Overall an awesome race!  Looking forward to next year!

This was my first triathlon (decided on the Oly distance).  I absolutely loved it, what an experience!  I even set a PR Innocent

It started off poorly for me though in the swim (39 mins, no wetsuit), I was extremely nervous and getting my breathing under control lost me a lot of time.  I don't think all the open water swim experience beforehand could of prepared me for how nervous I would be.  Having done it though, I know next time I'll be able to do much better.

I flew along on the bike, determined to catch up best I could (1 hr 14 min).  Rolling down Congress was just stunning.  It was my first time in Austin, what a lovely city.

The run was my favorite part I have to admit(43 min). I come from a running background so I felt strong getting off the bike and just enjoyed it as much as I could....the volunteers and supporters really made it an enjoyable experience.

Overall time was 2 hr 43 min.  Am very happy with that and already looking at ways to improve it.

Ok you speedsters out there are all making me look bad! I'm going to refrain from posting my time, but will say that I had a fabulous time (except for the boulder under the water that startled the crap out of me!). I was 14 minutes faster than last year, so that's something to be said. Making progress! Bring on Longhorn!

Great day! Even with the worst timing chip in history. Tenth out of 122 in M40-44 including the second fastest bike split at 23.2 mph! Woohoo.

No doubt!  That thing was horrid!  Hope it isn't the start of a new trend.

Congrats on smoking the bike leg and a great finish! See you out at Longhorn again this year.  Maybe I can chase you on a pre-ride again.
