Subject: First OLY Complete! Questions?
So I completed my first OLY this weekend down in Austin.  IT went great!  Being new to the distance though, of course I came across a few things during the race that I was unfamilar wit.

The main question I have is I really treid to sip my water during the 40K bike.  I wanted to gulp it down but I wanted to avoid any stomach cramp.  I took my GU about 15 minutes prior to getting off the bike.  When I got into transition and started my run though I had a real bloated feeling with a slight cramp (kind of like I was full of water).  It slowed me down at first but overtime it got better.  I felt like I really needed more water but I held up a bit in the first three miles becasue of the cramp.  I think this really affected me in my last mile becasue I was out of gas and really felt dehydrated at the end?  Any advice?

Hmmm. Well first, CONGRATS!!!

Was it a muscle cramp proper, or maybe what we'd call a side stitch?

How much water did you actually end up drinking on the bike?

Also, do you train with Gu's? Are you used to them?

Was it just water or a mix of stuff?

I used my prev race (Chicago Oly) to try my liquid fuel mix drink rate out for my upcoming HIM. I found that of the 2 x 24oz bottles I carried, I only drank one as I didn't feel good taking on anymore than that, this meant I didn't take on as many calories as I'd planned and I ended up using a gel at the start of the run.

ere is the breakdown of what I consumed:

Pre race 1hr before = 1/2 bagel and half bottle of water, 1/2 cup of coffee

30 min before = Gu and a few sips of water
Bike = 1 bottle of Puresport and 1 GU 3/4 through bike
Run= sips of water and puresport

Unfortunately, there's no absolute formula for proper nutrition/hydration. Everyone has different caloric needs and tolerances for what you can eat/drink both on the bike and on the run. Really the only way to figure it out is to practice in training and find out what works for you.

Looking at your breakdown, it seems like you actually might have been a little light on the nutrition (not enough solids and not enough calories). How long was your bike split? If liquids don't seem to work well for you overall, you might consider trying shotblocks (not as a replacement for water but in addition to). Your stomach might be more settled.

I'm also not familiar with puresport, how many calories are in a bottle?

The bagel water and coffee, I burn getting to the race, is that on top of breakfast. Was the puresport "workout or energy"...I'm not sure I like 6g of protein and energy is just wrong. Your fuel belt should of saved the day on the run.

Nutrition is always individualized.

I rarely use only water as hydration.  I try a mix with electorlytes, because I sweat.  I found using only water, I cramped.  I learned that I not only need the fluids (water) but I needed the electrolytes to keep from cramping.  I also know I need some other substance, gel, block, food, for an olympic.  Not much, but I start crashing just before 2 hours without any replacement.

Lastly, I can do everything right, and sometimes my body just doesn't want to cooperate, so cramps are something else all together (not enough recovery, not trained right).
