So, now that I'm fully hooked on triathlons, I still can't wrap my mind around a full IM distance.  I have set my sights on a HIM in June 2011--I'm totally excited about it and know I can do it.  However, at this point I will shout from the rooftops that I have no intention of ever doing a full IM.  Is it just a matter of time before I succomb to that siren song?  How many of you swore you'd never do an IM and at some point found yourself doing one?

Prior to doing an IM event I didn't say I would never do and IM race but I do remember saying that I don't think I ever could complete an IM.

Now after two IM finishes I can go on record an say I'll never do another IM race.

You sound like my boyfriend.

Swore he'd never do one. Up one side and down.

He is doing IMCOZ in Nov.

If you asked me before I started triathlons I would have said, I think the distance is too far to be healthy. Now I still believe it is too far but I hear the voices and might succumb.

I don't think I ever said I would never do one but for a long time it was something I just had no interest in doing.  More than 20-years after my first tri, which was an Olympic, I finished 140.  It was cool...glad I did it.  But I knew going in that I would not be doing one again.  There a re lots of really good triathletes that have no desire to do an IM.  Just like there are some really fast runner's that never wanted to run a marathon.

I've said it but I now know I will eventually do one.  But I have for sure said I wouldn't ever do a marathon and have done two.  And then I said that's it, no more, and next month will be toeing the line for what they are classifying as the worlds toughest road marathon (up Mt. Lemmon here in Tucson, although I haven't researched their claim to see if it is true).  I'm pretty sure this is it though for marathons as it will probably be a long lasting memory.  Basically you can't believe anything you ever tell yourself.

I did my first HIM in July. I was open to the idea of a full IM but wanted to see how I felt with the HIM distance first. During and immediately after my HIM, I swore a full IM was a silly idea and I had no interest in one. A couple days later, the fatigue wore off and I was again toying with the idea of a full. Maybe a week or two after that, I was signed up for IMTX. I figured some of that base training would carry over, and I might as well do it before I have kids. Oh I had some friends nudging me along too so it will be nice to have some training partners.

So the next question I'm contemplating...will this be my one and only full IM? I'm doing it just to be able to say I completed a full, so I don't think I'll have this burning desire to do more than one. But you never know!

Good luck with your HIM!

That pretty much sums up where I was...before I did two IMs...

In all honesty, though, it's unlikely that I'll do more than one more--if that.

There's no proof that I ever made such a statement!

It happens...if someone would have told me 6 years ago (before I started exercising) or even 5 years ago (after I'd been running and did my first sprint tri's) that I'd sign up for an Ironman, a Marathon, or an Ultramarathon, I would have laughed at the dim prospects.  I've done IMCdA, 2 ultramarathons, and finally a marathon.

Not quite the same thing, but I started this year saying 'no IM'.  I'm now signed up for B2B full.  Darned things are like potato chips -- you can't do just one...

What basis would people have to "swear to never do an IM?"

Training time takes too long? Too hard on the body? Costs too much? Fear of being bored to death by all those long slow training runs? All of those are good reasons, but things change and never is a long time.

bzgl40 - 2010-09-07 4:41 PM Basically you can't believe anything you ever tell yourself.

This might be my favorite line in all of BT.  It can be taken so many ways and in so many different contexts (and so out of context at times).

Somehow I don't think we'll see WTC offering fire sale prices on IMs anytime soon...

I said I would never do one after my husband posed the question 5 years ago after my first half marathon. I told him no "that's for crazy people", he laughed and said "sure ... whatever." Now he wishes we had bet money. After my first triathlon we had the same conversation and I said "no way." A little under 5 years after our first discussion I was wading in the water at IMAZ.

A little side note ... Looking back I'm glad I did IM but I think I would have wanted more racing experience under my belt. Most of the people in my training group are long course athletes, all out doing HIM and IM races. Had I started working with a newbie group I probably would have stuck with sprints and olympic distance races and worked on getting faster for 3 or 4 years before giving the longer distances a try.

So, I'm mostly hearing never say never...!  The good thing is I'm 40 years young so I have plenty of time ahead of me to wrap my mind around a full IM...or not!

x2

I also remember telling others "Ironmans are for crazy people! Those people are crazy!" and here I am...
In fact, in the "thank you" card I wrote to my mother since she is traveling to spectate the IM on Sunday, I wrote something like "Remember when I said I'd never do an Ironman because we agreed those people were crazy? Well thanks for accepting the fact that I might very well be a little crazy..."

Heh.

Don't know.  I've got 6 marathons under my belt, and they've all been painful.  Can't imagine running that distance after the swim and bike!

Guilty. After getting absolutely smoked by my first HIM and walking about 12 of 13 miles, I said to my self there is no way in H$$$, I could ever do a full IM. A few months later I signed up for IMFL and have done 1 a year since. Fortunately, prior to the full I did get the opportunity to return to the first HIM and exercize (or is it exercise) those demons by beating my time by about 50 min and getting a bit of confidence going into IMFL.
