Subject: 1% of adults can run a mile?
I had the worst race of my life this weekend, and was really beating myself up. Then my husband told me he'd recently heard a statistic that only 1% of the adults in this country can run a mile without stopping.

That sounds really low to me. Has any one else heard this, or seen a stat like that?

I guess it depends on the definition of "Run."  Otherwise, I would think 1% is low.  I would think that all of us would still be amazed at how low the percentage would be.  I also believe you are in a very small minority who actually attempted a race this year, so keep your head up.

I sort of agree but it depends on the word "can" or "won't."  I think if there were a McDonalds at the end promising a free Big Mac for those who finish, that percentage would climb rapidly.

That does sound low.  There are about 310 million people in the U.S. according to the US Census bureau.  So we're in the company on abour 3 million others?

Perhaps it was run a mile in a certain time?  Either way, I'm going out to run right now!Cool

I think almost anywhere you go you can find at least 2 people out of a hundred that can cover a mile "running". If I looked around Walmart (or McDonald's) I could find more than one in a hundred.

I thought it was like 5% of people would do a marathon in their life....if that is true, No way only 1% could run a mile at any given time.

I would believe anything under 10% though.

That's probably an accurate assessment.

I'm thinking that must be either within a certain time (as in "ran a mile within the last month") or speed ("a sub-6 minute mile") (as examples).

I don't run fast,  so if it was running a certain speed, I would surely fall out of the 1%.

1% makes no sense.  it has to be within a limit time.  probably something fast like sub 6 min.

If it's limited to people who can run non-stop without walking at all, then 1% may be possible. I know when I started running 10 years ago I couldn't go a mile non-stop and I had been biking 200 miles/week. Like many people I had no clue about pacing and just went too fast, got out of breath and had to stop. It didn't take long to build to being able to go a mile non-stop though.

If Disney is an accurate cross section of the US, and the sheer amount of folks needing scooters to enjoy the Magic Kingdom, I tend to agree with this 1% stat.

I agree!

I watched a 1-mile "race" this spring and this was a group of people who were intentionally signed up for the event and knew it was coming... and still there were about 25% or more that were walking by the halfway point.    I certainly couldn't run a mile 4 years ago without stopping, at least without a major incentive like big bucks or being chased by someone wanting to kill me.

Wow...just was saying the same thing about the scooters to my wife when we were at Disneyland a week ago.  You get especially sensitive to it when you are there to run a freaking half marathon.

Mind you, as recently as 2004, I was one of those blobs who absolutely couldn't run a mile if I was being chased by starving hyenas...

I went to Disneyworld in April, and my kids and I would get furious at the people on their Rascals at the bus stop.  Not only did they get to get on the bus first (along with their entire family), but as soon as the bus came they stood up and walked like Jesus had just come along and healed them.  At the end of a long day the last thing we wanted to do was wait 15 more minutes for the poor bus driver to load the rascal on the bus.  I don't remember this happening any other time I went.  Has our health really gone that far downhill that we can't walk around Disneyworld?  Sorry for the rant, what was this thread about again?

Today I ran about a half mile. Or, at least I ran 5 minutes straight and think it was about a half mile.

On the other hand, I did do that half mile 3 times within 23 minutes.

Someday I'll be able to run a mile. (In just a few more weeks if all goes according to plan.

Perhaps not surprising considering that 64% of all Americans are considered overweight.

I'm going to send my starving hyenas after you...somehow, I bet you're one of the 1% who can manage to survive the mile.
