Pre-race routine:

Same as any other morning.
Event warmup:

Light strectching.
Swim
  • 24m 57s
  • 2143 yards
  • 01m 10s / 100 yards
Comments:

Good swim overall. I pushed hard in the beginning to get away from the crowd and then settled into a comfortable pace breathing every 3 - 4 strokes. Everything was clear until the last 300 yards or so and I started catching people from the other waves. I almost had to stop a couple of times to find a path through the crowd.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 1
  • 05m 23s
Comments:

I messed up this transition. I took my time coming out of the water. I had my biking stuff in one bag and running stuff in another and grabbed the wrong bag. I forgot to undo the straps on my shoes so I fumbled with that. For what ever reason I wore gloves so that ate away some time putting those on. The good thing is I never stressed about any of it.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure my darn shoes are unbuckled and probably skip putting on gloves.
Bike
  • 2h 50m 45s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.68 mile/hr
Comments:

I went a little harder on the bike than I initially planned on. I had plans to keep my heart rate average at 125 but it averaging higher. Maybe it was the race day hype or something because I felt good. I had to stop once to pee. I tried to pee on the bike but just couldn't bring myself to it. I slowed things down a bit and then picked it up the last 5 miles since my legs were feeling good. I was hoping I wouldn't pay the price on the run for doing this.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Very pleased with this bike given my overall objective of this race.
Transition 2
  • 02m 31s
Comments:

This was still a somewhat slow transition compared to some other people but again I took my time and relaxed. I changed socks since mine were soaking wet from the bike.
Run
  • 2h 08m 19s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 48s  min/mile
Comments:

I am so happy with this run. I know it is not fast to a lot of people but compared to last year this is such an improvement. I walked some of the aid stations since this is what I'll be doing in Cozumel. The last 2 miles my legs were getting tired but I refused to walk this time. I can't tell you how happy I am with this pace.
Post race
Warm down:

Light stretching.

Event comments:

Transition area for this race just sucks. There is limited parking. Post race bike pickup was the worst. After racing they made you walk ~1 - 1.5 miles to get your bike! They changed the swim start times to make them closer together and that really bunched up the course. I guess this is no different than mass starts though. If they could get the transition area more organized it would help.

Great race!

It's interesting that you mentioned the pool logistics, parking, etc.  I did another race by Premier Event Management (Nation's Tri in DC) and had very similar problems.

Nice job Troy!  Congrats on nailing the run.  I'd love to be able to run that pace off the bike.  One day!!!
