Hello fellow Pacific North Westerners.  I am looking for a good HIM for next summer/fall.  I live in Portland and would like to be fairly close to home, but am willing to travel a few hours to get there.  Any suggestions on a good 1st HIM?  The plan is to do a few Oly's early on in the summer, then do the HIM later in the summer/fall.  Thanks for the answers in advance.

I will be doing Lake Stevens 70.3 just north of Seattle next year. It is mid August and as far as I know that is the closest late summer 70.3 to you, there is Boise in June also. There could be others that are not Ironmans though so could check into that.

Its early in the season (mid-June) but Pacific Crest has a 70.3 that is supposedly really nice.  I did the Oly last year and it was awesome.  The scenery here in central Oregon is top notch.  Its about a 3 hour drive from PDX.

I just did the Black Diamond Half  as my intro to 70.3 and really enjoyed it. It's in Emunclaw Wa, just east of Tacoma. Unlike Pac Crest it is not at elevation, and has a fairly flat bike & run course, water is just as cold though. And it's cheaper than IM branded events.

I haven't decided if I am going the Ironman 70.3 route, or the non Ironman event.  I was looking at The Black Diamond event though.  I think it will be between Pacific Crest, Lake Stevens, or Black Diamond...unless anybody has any other suggestions.

Great post. I'm moving to Portland next year and would like to try my hand at a HIM. I might have to check one of these out.

Lake Stevens was my first HIM, great course, rolling hills, I hear Black Diamond is a good one too.  Depending on how much training you have under your belt by the end of June, you might think about Pacific Crest, it has considerable climbing on the bike and the run can be very hot, but here in Central Oregon, you never know what the weather will do in June.  You might do the Oly at Pacific Crest if the HIM would be too early in the year and an Oly at Hagg Lake to get rolling hills in for Lake Stevens or the Black Diamond HIM course later in the summer.

You might checkout TriFreaks.com up in Washington.  They have a Long Course Triathlon (HIM distance) that is very flat up in Ocean Shores.  This may be my first.

Its probably too early in the season as its June 11th but Boise 70.3 was one of the funnest events I've ever done and I think has THE best finishing crowd. Great event.
