Member 127 | Subject: First 10 mile race coming up - help please Hi BT - So I'm running my first 10 mile race next weekend. I've been training for it and I feel good about it. Actually, I've never been a runner - just kind of got by, but I'm really enjoying the training and the longer runs. Anyway, two questions that I'm hoping you can help me with. 1. My running shoes are about done. My legs are starting to hurt and I know it's from my shoes. I have new shoes (same exact ones) waiting in the wings. Would you switch? I will have 3-4 runs before the race... so not exactly new on race day but close??? 2. I run with music. I have never ran a race with music, but most all of the running I do is multi-sport so that's usually not allowed plus it would take too long for me in transition. Since this is a running only I have the option to use my mp3 player. Those of you who do run with music, would you? I love the environment of a race and this is a big race, but I'm nervous I'll need the motivation from my music?? I'm leaning towards no, but wondering what you would do? Thanks for your help! |

Expert 2180 Boise, Idaho | Subject: RE: First 10 mile race coming up - help please 1) Are ya sure your legs aren't sore from overtraining? Sounds like you may have waited a wee bit too long to replace shoes (lesson learned). IMO I would wear the new ones for the rest of your training and see how you do. Might be 'darned if ya do-darned if ya don't'. 2) Most races have banned music devices altogether. Check with the RD to make sure, but the vast majority of organized events have banned MP3s/IPODS etc. GOOD LUCK! |

Within the past two years, USATF reversed themselves to allow RDs the discretion to permit mp3s, and since that ruling I see more races that are doing so.2) Most races have banned music devices altogether. Extreme Veteran 829 Tennessee | Subject: RE: First 10 mile race coming up - help please Surely you can be motivated for a big race without having to have your tunes??????? I know, I know I can't understand because I dont train with music. Start wearing the shoes today!! If they feel good for you on your runs between now and the race wear them! |

Champion 5781 Northridge, California | Subject: RE: First 10 mile race coming up - help please If the shoes are the same, make the switch for your next run and make sure they feel right. I switched to a new pair (same model) a week before a marathon last spring...no problem. If you find that your existing issues get worse, switch back and race in the existing shoes. Music? Personally, I think it's really a form of distraction, but if you think it honestly motivates you and the race allows it, then there's nothing stopping you from using it. I always recommend people learn to run without the distraction and to be open to the input from other competitors, the environment, and their own bodies, but I'm interested in the fact that you say you are leaning to not using music, even when you could in this case. Maybe you just need to listen to whatever it is that has you leaning against it...unless it's just fear of being judged (never a good reason), then it might be time to ditch the tunes. Good luck! |

Expert 2852 Pfafftown, NC | Subject: RE: First 10 mile race coming up - help please Honestly, IMO...new shoes feel the best from day one. If they're the same as your "old" shoes, I'd switch any time leading up to - and including race day. Good luck. |

Did not read the other responses. 1) Switch shoes. Run a couple of times in the new ones. If they are the same make/model you will be fine. 2) Take the music. You can easily take your headphones off if you want to be involved with what's around you. I like to keep mine off at the start and finish and aid stations. I also like having the option of zoning out on my music when it gets tough. I love running races because I can take my music! Good luck! |

Extreme Veteran 448 | Subject: RE: First 10 mile race coming up - help please FWIW, I usually run with the iphone due to work. Since I am lugging that thing with me I generally use the run tracker app and listen to tunes. Forgot headphones yesterday and did 6.5 miles with no tunes. It was quite nice. I think I'll do it more often. On the shoes, I agree with everyone else. If they are the same shoe I would start right away. |
