Subject: Heel / Calcaneal stress fracture recovery?
Hi all,

Short version: Anyone out there recovered from this condition? If so, what was your experience, treatment, etc.? Any info you have will be greatly appreciated.

Long verson: I've battled what I thought was plantar fasciitis for a few years now. Living in a remote part of the world far away from medical specialists, I just lived with my self-diagnosis doing my best with stretching, PF boots, etc. While I was home for a few weeks, I happened to be talking to a relative of mine who is an sports medicine orthopedist (shamefully I didn't know exactly which field she was in until just a few months ago). Anyway, she convinced me to drop by for an exam. Next thing I know, I'm in for a bone scan and it confirmed her suspicion... I have a stress fracture of the calcaneus, or heel. I had actually stopped running for a couple of months before this due to the extreme pain after upping my mileage in prep for a marathon.

She put me in a walking boot for 6 weeks, which I wore very consistently. I may have taken a few too many steps out of it right out of bed and right before bed... and that may be part of my problem. Anyway, 6 weeks later, the pain is back just from every day walking about. I did have a major tire malfunction on my bike 3 days out of the boot which required me to walk about 2 miles. An hour after that incident the pain was back.

A couple of weeks have passed since that walk and the pain is still there. In all honesty it doesn't feel any different than before. It's not constant pain, and sometimes I can even take steps pain free. But an hour or so after a walk, the pain is there. I really believe I should have been on crutches for a few weeks and then in a boot for several more weeks.

Anyway, my plan right now is to put myself on crutches for 4 weeks, then back in the walking boot for 4. Any more than that and I will likely have to miss my one big triathlon of 2011.

I had a calcaneal SFX this past summer. I went undiagnosed for almost 2 months, the PT and podiatrist thought it was ankle tendonitis. I finally got an MRI that confirmed it. By then I was 8 weeks into the injury (I had not been running on it but I was walking on it at work, cycling etc) so I wore the boot for a few weeks. A few days after getting the boot off I was scheduled for a follow up MRI, and I went and broke my 2 toes on that foot! The MRI at 12 weeks post injury showed it was almost completely healed but I had to take another 3 weeks off to let the toes heal. I started a very conservative return to running program. Every now and again I would think that the heel was hurting. But overall everything was going well until I had a bike crash last week, LOL.

If you have been in the boot, other things can get tight. Tendons, Plantar, ligaments. Hopefully you can get to a PT/sports doc who can recommend some strengthening exercises and an appropriate return to running program.

This is a good article by Pfitz regarding return to running after a stress fracture.

Hope that was helpful. Plz let me know if I can help any more.

Well one of the issues is just how long has it been broken?  We don't really know.  It usually takes 6-12 weeks for a  fracture to heal.  IF you are still having pain its not healed.  have been walking on it for a long time in or out of the boot Crutches may make you feel better and have less pain not sure if it will help you heal faster.  DOn't run, you are not ready yet.  If you Ask your relative/ortho.  SHe will guide you and is a great resource for you.

I had a stress fracture like that a few years ago.  I ran on it for probably 6 weeks before I finally saw a doc for it.  I did the boot thing for 6-8 weeks and continued no/low impact stuff for another 4 or so.  My doc told me "if it hurts dont do it" which was good advice.  I could do the eliptical at an incline but not the bike.  When I finally started running  I got asics gel shoes and didn't have any problems.

I am dealing with plantar facitis now,  I would rather have broken my bone again!!

x2 on the stretching/rehab advice.
