Elite 4547 | Subject: Best Snack Foods from your Childhood Somebody mentioned Jell-O Pudding Pops in one of the other threads and it got me thinking about all those awesome snack foods we all ate growing up. Any favorites out there you miss? The Jell-O pudding Pops and the Jell-O Gelatin Pops were both awesome. They had that super-thin layer of glazed ice over the pops. Great stuff. Topps baseball card gum. Sure, it was cheap, but man! That feeling of opening up about 10 packs of cards, organizing them into their respective piles and chewing the gum like it was a big wad of tobacco, loved it! candy cigs. just found some about a month ago at a gas station in Maryland. good stuff. |

Payson, AZ | Subject: RE: Best Snack Foods from your Childhood Pop Shoppe pop. You got to mix and match your pop and they were in glass bottles. You brought the bottles back to them and they cleaned and reused them. Loved the root beer for root beer floats, and all the other various flavours they had. Other then that I didn't get a lot of snacks that were not made by my mom. Cookies, cake, and pies where always flowing. Although I've been known to throw down a Wagon Wheel or two for school lunch, but I believe they still exist. |

The bubble-gum kind that were wrapped in paper, so that when you put them in your mouth and blow, the powder comes out and looks like smoke? Or the white pure-sugar kind with the red food coloring on the end? What about those wax tubes with colored sugar water inside? Pixie Stics? Fun Dip? Big League Chew? Awesomeness. |

Awesomeness. good questions moondawg. they were the white ones with the red food coloring at the tip. I do remember the ones that let you blow out powdered sugar like it was smoke! ha! I don't know which was worse, the candy cigs or the "Big League Chew" which resembled the pouches of chewing tobacco. I think the same geniuses that work in tobacco marketing to kids have new jobs in the gambling industry. Have you guys been to a Chuck E. Cheese lately? It's basically a casino for kids. Bright lights, prizes, prizes, prizes! ...and yes, all you mentioned was and is awesomeness! p.s. my wife just mentioned Soft Batch Cookies. Those were revolutionary at the time. Those rock hard Chips Ahoy were for the birds...if you remember back far enough, there were no Chewy Chips Ahoy yet. Edited by ChineseDemocracy 2010-10-22 8:22 PM |

I haven't seen a Mallo-cup in 30 years. They had the cards with coins printed ,d you could mail a butt-load back for, like an eraser or a kilobuttload for a pencil. Coke in glass bottles. Can or plastic isn't the same. |

You name it, and I probably indulged in it (candy-wise)! The ONLY things that I could NOT stand were black licorice, Good 'n' Plenty, and rock candy (that I recall). Candy cigs were da' bomb, and the "five and dime" store sold the ones that looked like Chesterfield - Marathon bars - Bottle Caps - Too many to remember. I'm surprised my teeth survived all the candy and not brushing enough and not visiting the dentist (Mother only did a couple of appointments in my life due to insurance or just not caring). |

There's not too much that beats homemade doughnut-lumps fried in lard, with homemade chocolate icing. Wow. I'm pretty sure I haven't had that in 20 years. |

Extreme Veteran 386 West Hartford, CT | Subject: RE: Best Snack Foods from your Childhood I grew up in a California farming community veeeeerrrry close to the border with Mexico. I was hooked on chili flavored saladitos - they are plums dried out with salt and covered with chili powder. Sounds gross, but they were absolutely delicious. A friend's father owned a small market and he had them soaking in chili sauce in a big plastic bucket. Oh my god. My mouth waters at the thought of it. One was probably equal to ten times the daily value in sodium, but who cares when you're a kid? |

Elite 4547 | Subject: RE: Best Snack Foods from your Childhood pga_mike - 2010-10-23 7:59 AM Peanut butter and FLUFF sandwiches. Come on! For whatever reason, my mom never bought fluff, but I do remember other kids having Fluffernutter sandwiches. bread, peanut butter and fluff. Getting home from school as a kid and ripping into the Hostess Suzy Qs and/or King Dons, (why they were called King Dons instead of Ding Dongs I still don't understand) that was some fun eatin'. Being a kid, having a 40+ house paper route every day after school, and then playing baseball, basketball, and football with friends until dark...that'll burn some calories! How 'bout the Monster Pixy Sticks? They were about a quarter each and were about a foot long and as thick as a small garden hose. |

I'm glad I never heard of chocolate cigarettes growing up...probably would have led to a nasty tobacco addiction! ...and yes, Jello pops and pudding pops need to come back. |

At my house, my mom kept the Suzy Qs in the refrigerator (like those things could EVER go bad! Ha!) By college, I really enjoyed the lemon cupcakes Hostess made. They were yellow with a bright yellowish-orange frosting on top. They came in a little pack of 2 cupcakes. MMMM. I remember something from college that was good once. It was a tube (looked like hair gel) come to think of it, it was the same consistency of a Gu Gel, except it was all simple sugars. Looks great until you are halfway through the tube and feeling like you're gonna barf your brains out! ...and how could I forget the goodies from the Polish bakery down the street from my babci and dzadzi...freshly-made half-moons, big chocolate chip cookies, and donut sticks (vanilla topping, and also chocolate topping) YUM. to Maggyruth, great idea at the wedding. Very cool. |
