Subject: what is your experience selling a bike online?
Was asked to sell my friends bike for him during the next two weeks.  I will def put in on craigslist here in LA, but just wondering about other sites like ebay, BT, ST??  Anyone had success...any ideas for me to list it.

2008 cervelo P2C 54cm with only 112 miles on it!!! (plus the warm up day before miles).  Yes he is ridiculous, buying a bike just before the race (and now he is doing it again).

I ask becasue I have tried to sell things before and the most common response I get is from a scammer.  thought maybe BT and ST would be at least a little bit immune to that.

I typically buy from CL or ebay, but I avoid selling on ebay b/c I hate messing with the shipping and the fees. Plus, I think you have a bit better control of  the pricing on CL.

As  far as selling here or ST or whatnot...the buyers are trustworthy, usually...but still have to mess with shipping.

I had a very good experience selling on Ebay. I was selling a vintage Colnago road bike that I knew would not be fully appreciated locally, but i got some very nice bidding action on Ebay.

Regarding shipping, call around to local bike shops. I found one that knew the drill, shipped bikes for people often. I think they charged me a flat $40 to pack the bike in a bike box (one that they saved from a new incoming bike) and ship it for me. Well worth it. Don't quote me on that price, but I remember it being very reasonable for the hassle it saved.

Warning -- before I found that bike shop, I called a couple others that acted as if I was asking them to solve world hunger. Just gotta find one that is happy to do this.

I've sold a Felt S32 that I listed here and ST. Three users on ST asked about it and the first one who responded ended up buying it. Wasn't a problem and shipping was $35 for packaging at my LBS and $35 for shipping at Staples.

Sold a Redline Conquest as well. No shipping involved as the guy's inlaws were passing by enroute to visiting his wife anyway.

No heartburn with either, no "I've changed my mind" no horsehockey. I'll do it again with this S32 when I get my project bike and start building it.

I've sold three bikes, a camera, and a motorcycle on craigslist, and I had positive experiences with it.  Granted, I waded through some scam replies with the bikes, but not nearly as many scams as the time I listed my Nikon D80 on CL.  I waded through scams for about 4-5 weeks before a serious inquiry came through for the camera.  Meanwhile, I didn't receive any scam inquiries for the motorcycle, though it took about 2 months before one serious inquiry came through, and the person bought it the same day of the inquiry.

Have you thought about consignment?  I sold a Trek mountain bike on consignment through a reputable local bike shop.  The shop owner put it in his showroom because it was in such pristine condition.  I got what I wanted for the bike, and didn't have to deal with unknowns via the internet.

I have sold a road bike and bought my Felt S32 on Craigslist.  To save yourself a lot of headaches and wasted emails, make sure your description is as detailed as could possible be, size and components, form of payment, lots of detailed photos.  If you are in an area that has multiple large communities make sure to list it in each one, people tend to be willing to travel a few hours time for a good deal on a tri bike.  I know, I live in NYC and drove up to Albany to buy mine.

Also keep in mind CL is a lot easier and free, so at least throw it up there for a week before doing Ebay if you go that route.

I had bought a tri bike from ebay and it wasn't exactly the right size so I had luckily kept the shipping box so I relisted it on ebay and put a buy it now price to recover my full investment and I had it sold and shipped in less then one day---I took it to the local UPS store to ship.  I will say if I didn't have the box it would seem like a pain to ship but I see the other responses list VERY reasonable prices to pack and ship from LBS's so I would do ebay again...of course here and ST would be good options too if you have the shipping worked out!

I sold my Softride tri-bike on ebay a few years ago to a guy in the Air Force. It was a very smooth transaction. I have a great feedback rating on ebay and so did he and all went well. Shipping was kind of a pain but I still had the box that the bike was shipped in when I bought it.  I used a reserve auction because I wasnt willing to sell it unless it sold for a particular amount.

I miss that bike.

CL is ok, if you don't mind setting up appointments and meeting with people, and having them take the bike for a ride.

If you go the ebay route- you might actually get the most for it that way, but be sure not to hide anything.  If there's a nick on the chainstay- take a clear photo of it.  Describe the product perfectly, including any flaws.  Nothing will annoy an ebay buyer more than if the product is not as described.

If the bike will be broken down for shipping- state that you will not be responsible for brake and derailleur adjustments once the bike is unpacked, and that they must go to a professional shop to have it adjusted before responding to the seller.  (this is what BikesDirect says)

I've sold three bikes on CL and my husband has bought and sold 10+ between CL, BikeForums and ebay over the years.  I also sold a car on CL, so there is really no limit to what you can do with it.  Like others have said, be wary, be detailed and be smart about it.  And yes, trying out CL for a couple of weeks before you go the ebay route is a good idea just because you tend to have better control over pricing and usually won't have to ship.

My husband has bought and sold bikes on CL that were shipped out of state too, so that's a possiblity as well.

We've both had much less trouble with scammers on bikes than we did/do on electronics or computer equipment.

Wouldn't their car be at your house when they ride it? I'd think that's plenty of collateral for most instances.

I assume they'll drive to your house to test ride -- just hold their keys for them.

I've purchased 2 bikes on CL and had no problems.

Most people expect you to require something be left with you, so it's not really a big deal.  In our case, either they left a car (since we now live out in the boonies!) or when we lived closer in and they came by light rail - they left their spouse/companion!

It is helpful to have a pair of platform pedals available for test rides (assuming you are selling the bike without pedals) just incase they don't think to bring their own (which most people don't).

I sold my old road bike on Craigslist (after buying my tri-bike on BT). I got the price I wanted, and a new training partner out of it.
