Total Time = 1h 51m 35s
Overall Rank = 129/223
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 21/33
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5:00 am and drove to race by 7:00am. Got transisition area set up, body marked and went to check out the water
Event warmup:

Swam out to the first buoy and back.
Swim
  • 14m 25s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Tried to take it easy and smooth. Started well off to the side to avoid the mess heading towards the first buoy. Worked well and I got into a nice smooth rhythm and didn't work too hard. I got run over the second half by a speedster coming up from the previous wave.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more often. I haven't swam much at all since May and it caught up to me.
Transition 1
  • 03m 17s
Comments:

I was really slow for some reason. No urgancy at all. I was slow getting my cycling jersey on, had trouble with my socks. I think I was still in the mindset of my half ironman instead of a sprint.(think you could say the same about the swim)
What would you do differently?:

Practice the transitions a bit more. A few minute in a short race can make a difference.
Bike
  • 1h 01m 5s
  • 20 miles
  • 19.65 mile/hr
Comments:

I love this course. Flat out and back with a few small rolling "hills". You can really get moving. I have been having problems with my front derailer and the chain kept popping off when I shifted to the big ring, so I rode the whole way on the small ring. Even so I had one of my fastest rides averaging over 19.6 MPH. To put it in perspective I was 18 minutes faster than last year. The second half of the race I hooked up with a group out riders. We kept leapfrogging each other and did our best to not draft (spread out across the road). It really helped keep the pace up.
What would you do differently?:

Get my bike a tune up before the race. Only having the small ring probably cost me a few miniutes. I have been working hard on an indoor trainer, it helped alot but I need to practice cornering, I lost alot of momentum. Bike shoes wouldn't hurt either.
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

Better than T1. Sprayed on some sunscreen and got a big drink of water.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 31m 35s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 54s  min/mile
Comments:

Got off to a slow start. Tried to drink at first water stop and almost drowned as it went down the wrong tube. My calves also felt like they were about to cramp. However, I stayed calm and let thing come to me. Fortunately it did. I ran each mile faster than the last and finished strong
What would you do differently?:

Don't know. Didn't think I had a drinking problem and I have been doing bike-run bricks fairly regularly. Maybe drink more on the bike to set myself up better?
Post race
Warm down:

Walked back to pinic area, loaded up my stuff in the car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Mechanical problems with my bike and wasn't in a racing frame of mind for first half of the race.

Event comments:

This is a really nice small race. 10th annual race. The Bamino Biathlon for the kids (during bike portion of the tri) was a big hit (sold out for 3rd straight year).

Nice race Andy!

This was my first time there.  And, yeah, the Bambino race is great--my son did it this year.  I saw you're going to be at Diamondman next month.  I'll be there too for my first 1/2.  Good luck!
