Subject: To rest or not to rest
I have been dealing with a GI issue since Sunday afternoon.  On Monday I decided to stick with the plan and run anyway.  1.5 hour run cut down to a miserable .75 hour run.  Opted to rest on tues and then last night ran 1.25 of planned 1.5 still feeling like crap only my left calf particularly was cramping most of the 2nd half of the run.

Today I get up and my calf is killing me and seems very tight still.  I should be running tonight to stay on plan with a Half Marathon trail race that includes lots of hills, 3.5K of elevation change, that will certainly need my calves full attention to complete.

I have only been running for 2 years now and don't really know how to tell if I should just not worry about it and run tonight anyway or if I should take off again because there is potential to injure myself.

I have already missed 1 run this week and cut two others short.  Is this really no big deal and I should just take the night off and relax?

Is this the race on your log that is planned for this weekend?  If so, definitely rest.  At this point you've done everything you can do

Yes it's that race, although I had not planned to "race".  It is one leg of my Ultra in Feb so I was only running it to get familiar with the course and planned to go easy and just use it as a training run.  That is why I had not planned any downtime or taper days prior in my plan.

Better to take extra rest than push on and get an injury

I'd take a rest.  Sounds like your body needs a little time to recover -

Thanks, I saw the flip turn thread...perhaps I will go work on that instead.

If "To rest or not to rest" is the question,
the answer is almost always "rest".

If you are injured, ill, fatigued, etc;
you are going to gain little benifit from any individual workout,
but you sure could do damage.

i.e. the downside potential is much greater than any possible upside.

Spoken like a true triathlete: "Yeah, I'm injured so I'm going to take the day off from running and focus on swimming technique instead."

They're going to need to include an entry for us in the DSM V.
