Hard to do too much. Tennis ball sucks though. Get a lacrosse ball or something harder.

Tennis ball for my feet or even a racquetball or golf ball for my feet.  Trigger Point roller for the rest of the body.

till ya can't feel it?

the first three weeks of using a foam roller hurt SO BAD (but so good @ the same time). Eventually it didn't hurt as bad and I knew how much I "kneaded" to get the kinks out.

Love the foam roller!

I've had a different experience than what others have posted...

My senior year of college ('07) my entire cross country season was derailed by ITBS.  I tried SO hard to get myself in a place where I could run pain-free doing everything from icing/heating/stretching/foam roller, etc.  Nothing seemed to help.  Long story short, I got frustrated right before our conference championships and stopped going to my PT sessions (i.e. no more foam roller).  Three days later, I had ZERO pain in my knee.

I've seen a few massage therapists/ART doctors that have told me I have a very high tolerance for pain (not trying to sound like a tough guy - promise).  I relayed my story above and a few of them said, I was probably rolling so hard that I caused irritation (i.e. made it worse).

All I'm trying to say is that there *might* be a point where you are going too hard.  That being said, it is going to hurt like CRAZY if you are doing it right, so don't be scared to push it a little.

Softballs work really well, too. You get more coverage than a gold ball but it's much harder than a tennis ball. They work awesome on the lower back/hip flexors,  shoulders, and butt.

Check out this website.  They'll tell you the proper way to do it all and duration and little video's etc.  Awesome site.

I was going to say softball too. Its the best esp. for the back and glutes. Tennis ball is way too soft.
