I lost my taste for them when they redseigned the body, and made it look not like a Saab. I now have a Volvo wagon. |

Also, full disclosure: I drive a 1981 Toyota Celica hatchback GT 5-speed with the world's greatest stereo. I love this car so much I will drive it until it decomposes around me. 191,000 and going strong baby. :) oooh, cool! If anyone can find me a 1985-87 Corolla GTS hatchback let me know! It's insane what those are going for on ebay these days thanks to Initial D. Here's one with almost 200,000 miles, ripped up interior and it's still going to go for over $3,000 I bet you. I have a 93 Suburban that is totally utilitarian for me. I paid $6k for it, it now has 216k miles, tows the race car, holds a 4 bike rack, canoes, the whole family, great to travel in. I too hate to see single drivers in huge SUVs but I try to limit driving mine to family trips or towing. 86 Buick Turbo T: race car, twin turbo, built from scratch by me, shamefully neglected the past year in favor of my training.  Has its' own (out of date) web site: http://www.secondhandsix.com/ttype/index.htm88 Chevy S-10: Given to me by a co-worker when the dealership threw $300 worth of parts at it and it still didn't run. Replaced the ECM with a $10 junkyard one, driven to work and anywhere that I only need 2 seats. Slated to receive a turbo Buick V6 at some point. 05 Scion xB: As said earlier, "So ugly it's cool". Great fuel economy, reliability, loads of room, and I like the way it looks. Too bad my wife has appropriated it and I never get to drive it.  |

Its a pretty good car/SUV - got a supplier discount + 0% financing at the time so it was pretty cheap too. 65000 miles and still going strong - only a few small complaints. Overall I'd recommend one to anyone who is looking. It works well for tri - lots of room and its pretty good on the gas mileage. I'd stay clear of the AWD option and recommend the Honda V6 that comes in it now. Of course I'd love one of those new Audi A3s just because they look like a hoot to drive. jsargevt |

molto veloce mama 9311 | Subject: RE: What kind of car do you drive? strongly believe you do NOT need an uber-vehicle to live an active lifestyle. i really admire the folks who go car free and bike or walk everywhere. now THAT is an active life! we are a one car household w/ a vw golf. my husband bikes most of the time march-november. i don't drive and have never had a driver's license, so i walk and bike everywhere (yes, w/ the kids - ella walks at least a mile a day, and has covered 4+ miles in a stretch. she's a very healthy, strong kid). we use the car for some grocery runs (since we have a burley d'lite and a burley flatbed, we can get our groceries by bike). we've been using the car 2-3 days a week this summer, usually for things that like big grocery trips, getting to races, getting to places to backpack or camp (although we're hoping to do some bike touring/camping trips next year), and any major travel we have to do. my husband is 6'4", we have two children (ages 4 and almost 2), and a 100+ lb dog. we all fit in the golf. we put a yakima rack on the top w/ a thule hard top which can hold all our backpacking gear, race gear, etc. we can get 2 bikes next to it (and though we haven't tried it yet, my old bike shop boss has told me we could easily strap the burley between the two bikes). the dog takes up the entire hatchback area of the car. we call it our 'ultimate SUV' since we can fit nearly all our bike and camping gear in or on it. |

Hooray 4 you, Autumn! I forgot to add that my other car is my road bike, which I use about half the time for commuting (30+ miles round trip - pretty good workout in itself!). The amount I eat, though, it might be cheaper to fuel a car. |

molto veloce mama 9311 | Subject: RE: What kind of car do you drive? that's quite a commute there! my husband commutes about 10 miles each day, but closer to 20 if he comes home at lunch (which he usually does). i commuted about 16 miles a day year round, before i had kidlets. the extra food isn't the cost problem in our house - its tubes, patch kits, lube, and all the old beater bike my husband picks up to convert into single speeds or fixed gears! luckily, he is now starting to sell some of them (one he got for free, fixed up, and is selling for $80!). i can get a bit didactic about the car stuff...but really, its such an awesome thing to not drive all the time, especially with kids. the girls and i have discovered hidden places we never would have found together if i was driving them around everywhere. we bike along the lakes and river, walk through local parks and gardens, and even on the bus we here different languages and meet interesting people. |

Also I used to a mile up the side of a mountain where we regularly got tons of snow...a non 4WD car was not an option When I got to FL I bought a toy BMW Z3 convertible....Totally not practical but get much better gas mileage than the rover. I don't live far from my office but I can't see patients all sweaty and gross with helmet hair. |

I think I get more frustrated with people in nice cars who are dangerous drivers because a) I am bitter that they have a nicer car than me, b) I project that the reason for their inconsiderate driving is that they think BECAUSE of their nice car they get to drive insanely. So really, it's my own deal. In fact, put anyone in a bad mood behind any wheel and you got an accident waiting to happen. |

We are a two mini-van family...2000 Pontiac Montana Extended (mine) and a 2001 Pontiac Montana with the shorter wheelbase (for my DW). Plenty of room for our two boys, and both are full of sports gear. Bike fits well inside, too. That being said, I'm looking at dumping my van for a Chevy Malibu or Impala. I commute and I'm looking to be more fuel efficient. At 6'7", I do have limitations on how small the vehicle can be. In a perfect world, I would seriously consider an Xterra. |

Don't be too sure - my DH is 6'8" and he fits perfectly in a VW Beetle he test drove because the roof is domed and the seat has long rails. He actually found it more comfortable than my dad's Crown Vic, which isn't really made for a tall person. |
