Shopping for my 1st tri bike - I am looking at the Cervelo P2 and the Trek Speed Concept 7 - any opinions??? or advice???  I know comfort is the most important but if that is equal which bike would you go with?

Get a professional fit then choose a bike based on your fit.

+1 on getting a pro-bike fit. The amount of money spent prior to your investment will go along way in making the right choice. I know we all want it NOW! But with a bit of patience, you will learn quite a bit about making the right choice via a pro-bike fitter.

I think we are all enamored by the popular brands via advertisements and Kona bike counts. Certainly Cervelo and Trek are top tier brands (wish I had either) and the LBS can fit almost anyone via frame sizes, seat / bar adjustments, etc. but test riding them in the LBS parking lot or down their street without any real adjustments (other than seat height) doesn't cut it when you need to be in an aero position for the duration of a 15k or 112 mile bike split. Secondly, when reviewing brands also look at the components that you get with them. For example, a Cervelo P2 may come with an Ultegra drivetrain whereas the Trek (depending on the grade) may come with a 105 for the same price.

If you do get a bike fit prior to your purchase, hammer the bike fitter with any and all questions about brands, components and fit. At the end, they may have their own preferences but you will walk away with a detailed document of your specific measurements and knowledge so that when you do decide, you will make the right choice. Finally, when you're ready to purchase your bike, you can give the measurements to the shop so that they can make all the adjustments prior to your pick up.

I'm no expert by any means but I did it the wrong way the first time and I won't make the same mistake on the next purchase. I now have my measurements in safe keeping! Good luck!

2 very different geometries. Get the fit and see which one works best.

Which ever bike fits better. If they both fit equal personally I'd go with the P2 over the 7 series SC. However I'd take a 9 series over the P2 but that's a whole different ballgame.

Thanks for the replies - I did the pre-fit on the trek.  The P2 is not as adjustable BUT the adjustments made on the trek make the trek fit like the P2 would without needing adjustments....I also am trying to stay in the 2000-2500 range..and these 2 do.

I've heard that unless you're getting fit on an adjustable bike fit-specific bike (not actually a bike - looks like a spin bike w/out wheels) you're not getting the best bike fit possible.  Not sure of the truth in that - just food for thought.

Which SC 7 are you looking at? I was considering the 7.0, but I did not want the SRAM Apex group set as I'd rather have a traditional gear range not the range of a triple that the 50/34 - 11/28 Apex provides. My trek dealer wanted more than $2500 for the 7.0 also

I considered the P2 also, what the P2 offers in specification is way higher, the P2 price has dropped significantly this year, prob' because they have long ago recouped the R&D of the frame design.

As for the fit everyone else is right, a fit first then a bike that works with your fit measurements, but I'm guessing both these bikes will.

For me the spec was iffy on the SC 7 and the P2 was a push to get it to fit so I went for something else.
If the fit had been better I would have gone for the P2 over the SC 7, definitely more bang for the buck.

I got the SC 7.0 wsd...I had the Cervelo P3 and the Trek side by side on trainers...the Trek felt better size wise even though they are almost the same..it is a little more compact....now only about 4 more months until I get to ride it outside...

I wish I had either.  I still ride my roadie.  Cervelos are awesome, but I have talked to others that have said they ran into transition and their heads were spinning when they saw dozens of other cervelos that looked exactly like theirs.

Have you been outside on your new SC?  I'm in the same situation.  Deciding between a SC and a P2.  Are you happy with your choice?  How does it feel?  I'm looking for comfort because I will be doing my first Ironman this year.

Thanks,

Christin

Both are good bikes and you cannot go wrong. The fit you got on the SC, when you duplicate that on the P2, does the P2 end up with more or less spacers on the steerer tube?

how do the stem lengths compare?

if you know your preferred stack and reach it makes it easy to compare various brands and sizes within those brands to find a good fit.  The fewer spacers needed the better, since a nice aero cervelo or speed concept head tube is more aero than round spacers.

I've been back and forth with the SC7.0 and P2 for months. Been test riding both as well as the 7.5 and P3. I'm a size small on the Trek and either a 48 or 51 on the Cervelos. I was considering the SC7.5 but then might as well go for the P3. I don't want to spend that much though. I've decided to go with the size 48 P2. I like the smaller bike.

My deciding factor was choosing a fitter and going based off his recommendations and experience fitting people on both bikes.

I'll take the role of devil's advocate here and ask if you have looked at all into the Felt "B" line or the Cannondale Slice?  They are both very competitive lines and compare directly to the two bikes you are considering.

I wanted to revive this thread because I am looking at both of these bikes, as well.  I was looking at getting either the P3 or 7.5 and leaving it stock, or getting the P2 or 7.2 and getting upgraded wheels.

Anyone have any thoughts about either of my choices--i.e., any good info about the Cervelo/Trek general question and the higher end stock or lower model with upgrade is much appreciated.  Thanks so much!

One thing I do not see here is the fact that the P2 and P3 have different geometries...The SC 7.0 and 7.5 are exactly the same except for the fact that they come with different components and have different paint etc. The Cervelo P2 and P3 are completely different bikes with separate geometry. The P2 and SC 7.0/7.5 are more similar in that they have a semi relaxed geometry whereas that P3 has a very aggressive geometry. If you are the kind of person who likes to ride high on the aero bars and be comfortable I would not even look at a P3, but rather just the P2.

Well, I went Sunday and yesterday and test rode the Trek, the P2, the P3, and--for good measure--the Specialized Transition and Cannondale Slice.

Ended up going with the P2.  The P3 was a bit too low for me, I absolutely hated the LBS that sold the Cannondale, which may have soured me on the bike, and the Specialized just didn't fit right.  Totally stoked to get out and ride this thing!  Thanks for all the help!!

I am also looking at the P2 (last year's model as long as the LBS still has one in my size) and the Felt B16.  I have heard many people on here say to get a professional fit first.  My problem is that I have not been able to find a professional fitter in my area (Davenport, IA - The Quad Cities area).  Anyone have any suggestions?

If you plan on traveling for business, a race, or vacation in the near future, maybe figure out if there is a professional and reputable fitter in one of those locations?  I got fit before even looking at the different models, and that fit came with a 30-day and 60-day recheck once I actually purchased a bike and had it adjusted to the pro fit measurements.

Thanks!  I've gotten to take it on a ride already, and I notice SUCH a difference from my roadie.  Hills are so much easier!  I can tell I'm going to be in love with this thing for a long long long time!

Is the gear ratio different on your new bike? That might probably account for hills being easier. Otherwise a tri bike shouldn't be that much different than a road bike for handling hills... At least as far as climbing. Of course the two handle much differently.

Actually, I have a compact crank with a 12-25 on my roadie and a standard crank with a 12-25 on the tri.  BUT the P2 is my first carbon frame--I think I am transferring more power to the frame than on my aluminum roadie.

The new bike is quite likely lighter, transfering more power to the wheels, and shifting more effectively in addition to potentially being fit more correctly. Its quite possible that it is substantially faster at climbing hills.
