Curious to know the time difference of people who have completed both events? I realize that many different things come into play (course, weather, etc...), just looking for some general info.

General rule of thumb, add 30-45 min.

Marathon PR- 3:59
IM Marathon- 4:35

So much more goes into how well or bad your IM marathon will go. You already mentioned course and weather but Swim pacing, Bike/Run pacing and nutrition might be even bigger.

Just did IMFL a month and change ago at ~4:43.
Ran open mary last weekend in 3:53.

I did not run my IMFL smartly which probably cost me 10-15 minutes.

Marathon PR 3:54
IM Marathon 5:01

(I crashed on the bike, dislocated my shoulder and banged up my hip pretty good. I would guess on a normal day that the 45 minute longer guess would be pretty accurate.)

Sounds about right. I would add that you may need to adjust that a little if you run the marathon in cold/ideal weather and the Ironman in very warm conditions. The IM I just did was 94 degrees on the run, so comparing that with an open marathon that was run in 45 degree weather should be accounted for.

My marathon PR is 4:44.  The marathon of my first IM at Florida in November was 5:04.  I did a run/walk at IMFL, so I was very happy with that time vs my PR.

Me?:

Me:
First IM marathon = 5:20
One month later,
3rd open marathon = 3:57

So, yeah. I was having to stop at every bathroom stop on the run at IM, so that cost me a lot of minutes. Plus feeling like garbage makes it tough to run a decent pace.

Hijack - Do you pronounce your last name Hohl, like "HOLE"? If so that would make your nickname A-HOLE, right? Good Stuff.

Yes, yes, that's correct.
I purposely didn't name any of my kids names that begin with "A," but I married into it, so it was my choice and therefore I can have a little fun with it.

Is the question more salient or timely due to the nature of my post? I could give a little more detail about the 3+ hours of diarrhea and resultant chafing, if it would make it funnier for you....

I think you could spare us those details!

However, your book sounds interesting...

This is fairly accurate.  YRMV.

Unless of course you fry yourself on the bike.   Then get ready for a long, painful 26.2.

Or unless you are undertrained for the IM marathon. Ya'll have amazing run times - kudos!

Very interesting thread! I am training for my first Ironman (CDA'11), and was very curious as to what my run time would be.

I ran a 3:34 in may '10. I really want to run under 4 hours, so I'll need to be careful on the first two legs and train like a madman!

Sounds like you are already a very strong runner so although it may sound counter-intuitive, you'll want to train to be strong on the bike. Then you can bike your IM relatively easy and be fresh for the marathon. Nail your nutrition and a sub-4 should be easy to achieve.

x2.  Most marathons are cooler just because they start early in the morning.  But you'll be running your IM marathon midday.

The temperature factor becomes really unpredictable with CdA.  This year I think I saw the temp at 88F during the marathon.  But in 2009 it was something like 45-50F and drizzle... space blankets galore.

Interesting stats to say the least.  My marathon PR is 4:18 so it looks like (based on these findings) that I'm looking at a 5 hour split in IM distance.  One interesting note, the top five at last years Kona all ran around 2:55 (2:48 winner Craig Alexander) and according to the formula in here, if these guys just ran marathons would be running 2:20's which would place top 20 at Boston............amazing

I think I had heard of a few profesional level ultra triathletes doing marathons and the differences between the two were not as great as with age goup level athletes.  Personally, my pr marathon time is a 3:30 and my pr ironman marathon time is 4:30.
