Interesting stats to say the least.  My marathon PR is 4:18 so it looks like (based on these findings) that I'm looking at a 5 hour split in IM distance.  One interesting note, the top five at last years Kona all ran around 2:55 (2:48 winner Craig Alexander) and according to the formula in here, if these guys just ran marathons would be running 2:20's which would place top 20 at Boston............amazing

The pro's will have less performance degredation in their run. Thye likely run the IM marathon with 15-20min of thier potential open time.

In 2008, Normann Stadler ran a 2:32:18 in Frankfurt.  At this time he was well trained (it was shortly after IMH and where he dropped out) and the best IM run split I could find is 2:55.

Not that one data point means that much, but looking at pro results, it is interesting to see that an athlete who is not consider a great runner compared to the other pros in the sport can put up a 2:32.

Just wanted to chime in, I've finally got a marathon and IM in the books.

Gusher Marathon in Beaumont, TX 3:49 March 2011

IMFL 2011 run 3:58

Did lots of miles training for the marathon in March but race day was a warm. Run miles were cut in half training for IMFL, but 6 weeks before the race got in quality long runs in weekly. Had a great taper and race. Rode conservatively on the bike and had a great run.

As mentioned, IM marathons start midday or latter for most, while open marathons start early in the am when it is usually cooler and easier to run. Many factors affect the run part of the ironman, like swim fitness/pacing, bike fitness/pacing, nutrition and early run pacing.

So, I've been wondering about this.... I do most of my run training early in the day. I definitely feel a bit stronger on morning runs than on the occasional afternoon/evening runs I do. I feel like maybe my body has sort of acclimated to running in the morning. I'm wondering if I should try to shift some (most?) of my run training to the afternoon evening as I get closer to my first IM next summer.... Thoughts??
