I'm considering signing up for a masters swim class.  What do you think would be appropriate swim attire for the men?  Briefs, Jammers, Trunks?  I have swim trunks but am trying to decide if I need to purchase a pair of swim jammers (knee length, biker short looking) or swim briefs for the class.  I want to avoid the "that guy looks stupid in those trunks" or "look at the superstar in the biker shorts" comments.

Yes, beginner clearly over-thinking things, but the class doesn't start for a few weeks so I have the time to do so. ;-)

I did a masters swim class for six months with trunks (actually a pair of running shorts).  Everyone else had jammers.  I did not wear anything different until my first triathlon when I donned my brand new tri shorts.  I wear jammers at the pool now.

+3 for the endurance jammers. They hold up to the chlorine really well and last about 100x longer than lycra suits.

Don't go "banana hammock" unless you are European or have the body of a Greek God and want the women's HRs to go up quickly.

(Actually, just don't go banana hammock)

Make sure you get the polyester ones. They last several times as long as others.

Jammers for sure.  I showed up for my first Master's swim with board shorts.  Switched over to jammers within a couple weeks.  Just ge the jammers now.

Dig out your old Speedos and layer. Three suits...no more.  Most discoloured on top.

Full length jammers are good, but I prefer the shorter, square leg style:

Totally agree on the endurance fabric.

What about the men-folk that appreciate the hammock look?

Square leg speedos.  Comfy, and  the extra couple of square inches of fabric help avoid the banana hammock look.

When I am at a public pool swimming laps or training. I wear board shorts. No need to show off the goods in training. I also figure the extra drag will help with training.

For Masters, briefs, square leg, or jammers will be appropriate.  Honestly, if it is a good Masters class, you'll be getting a great workout and you or nobody else around you will care what you are wearing.  As others have mentioned, go with polyester because it lasts much longer - as in years, not months.   As far as the brief or no brief debate goes, wear what you feel most comfortable in.  I've worn the briefs for way too many years to worry about what others think.  I have noticed peoples fashion concerns drop with their lap times and years in the pool.

Welcome to Masters - it's a great organization.
