Pre-race routine:

had a bit of breakfast at 5:00 and drove to the site. I was dreading the fog and the fact that I knew that the water was going to be 85 degrees. I had hoped that the big thunderstorm we had had at my hotel in Orange might have dumped a little cooler water in the lake, but alas it was not to be.
Event warmup:

Got marked and chipped and went for a short swim warm-up. The water was hot hot hot, and very dark and cloudy. additionally, the pea soup fog made the bouys very difficult to spot.

Spend more time swimming in a cannibal's cooking pot

Good transition. There was a short grassy hill to run up to get to the mount line, and a short section of gravel road that lead out onto the road

I had a very good ride. I really wanted to break 22mph, but it was not to be.
What would you do differently?:

Go a bit faster (maybe I need a new bike)

Comments:

I really liked the XC aspect of the course. I thought it made the race much more interesting and allowed the spectators to see the racres several times. Plus It had a much smaller impact on the community.
What would you do differently?:

run faster

Congrats on finishing. That was a good time too, because that course was pretty rough...fun...but rough.

Good race, Dave.  Nice bike times,  what are you riding?  I'm sure Set Up is glad to hear that someone like the run, I think a lot of people were upset.

Great race. I'm interested in hearing about this race because I plan to do it next year. This year it fell on my sons birthday. Was it well run? It seems like some didn't like the course.

I have an older (1998) black GT Course...retrofitted w/aerobars it weighs like 22 pounds. Yep, I like running off-road. I think that the "worms in my legs" feeling I get off the bike is less when I get to strat out on a softer surface.  Racing isn't supposed to be easy. I don't see what folks are upsedt about. After all, EVERYONE set a PR for this course.

I think the race was run very well.  In the few events that I've done through Set Up Inc, they definitely seem to have it all together.  As far as the course goes, the bike course was challenging, but thats just the terrain of the area.  For the run course, no one that I talked to (competitors) seemed to know why they changed the run course and took it off the roads.  I'm sure the race directors had their reasons, but I didn't like it.  It was slippery, and as mentioned in my race report there were holes in the field we ran through, and you couldn't really see them because of the grass.  I defintely plan to do the race again, however I'll prepare for the run course, under the assumption that it might end up being the same off road course again.

i think they were upset because they didnt expect the off road run course.  if you had looked at the run course map anytime before last week, you would have seen the original road course.  i personally only found out about the change after reading about it on another forum.  and yes, it is the competitor's responsibility to know whats up, but i do think that is the reason for some people being unhappy with it.

My first tri, so I've got nothing to compare it to, but here's my two cents worth:

I thought it was very well run/orgainized. I didn't like the X-country run, but it would have been better if it hadn't rained like heck the night before. Actually, my ideal run by the time I finished biking would have been a 3.1 mile gradual downhill on a manicured golf course!

My only real complaint would be the gravel downhill/uphill at the start/finish of the bike. I was sure I was going to lose it a couple of times on that stuff! In fairness, though, I don't know how they could have avoided it, based on where the road was in relation to the lake.

You know I ran Mission Man last weekend and it was a XC type run, but I knew that, from last year when everyone was surprised. Set-Up called it "hard-packed" trail... I don't know about that. Mission Man was fun as well though. However, this year, on the brief part of the course on the road, people were supposed to run on both sides of the cones, but everyone stayed to the shoulder side forcing the runners going out to run on a steep angle in the grass.

Set-Up ALWAYS provides great supports, but sometimes the run courses seem to be thrown in anywhere. That's definitely an area they need to work on.

Good job on your race.

It was my first race, and I enjoyed it. A lot of people from outside the area seemed to be griping that Setup Inc described the course as flat. It wasn't, but for me, I would have complained about the hills even if they warned us. I like to complain while running up a hill.

I'd do that race again, though. I would just try to train for more than 5 weeks beforehand.
