Subject: Race Tires

I am looking to buy new tires for my Trek Madone 5.2.  The bike came with Bontrager Race X Lite tires and I have been pleased with them.  I am thinking about buying the Michelin 3's.  Does anyone have any opinion or suggestions and is there any noticable gain in performance from one race tire to the next?

Take a look down the page. There are at least two threads going on about race tires right now.

I would keep the Race X Lite but locate some latex tubes.

Don't this as gospel, but as I recall the race x lite were actually pretty high on the list for low rolling resistance tires.  You might want to stick with 'em and invest in some latex inners for race day.

If I can assume that by Michelin 3s you mean their Pro3Race tires, then that's a very good general purpose tire that balances durability, flat resistance and performance. Great if you want tires you can train and race on. But you are going to give up a few watts on race day for the privileges of not having to switch them out on race day.

x2 what the Bear said.
Two years ago I raced on Vittoria EVO Coursa which are one of the fastest (lowest resistance) tires out there. But I flattended twice and after 1000km I litteraly wore though the tire to the tube.
Now I ride on the MichelinPro3's - its a happy medium. More durable tire and I'm guessing I give up 5 to 10 seconds over a 40km race. To me that's the differance between 56th and 57th so I'm ok with that. If you are racing for the podium, it may make a differeance.

I Think they were high up on the list aswell.

I have a Madone 5.1 with the race x lites and I'm quite pleased with them.
