Howdy!  I have my first 50k coming up in April, and then want to try a 50 miler in November... My goal is to pace a buddy of mine in Leadville in 2012, and then complete a 100 miler of my own in 2013...  My question is when I get up to the 50-100 mile range how long do my long runs need to be?  Even training for a marathon do I do the full distance before the race or not?

Don't know if this effects anybody's answers but I'm running in Nike Free's and transitioning to VFF's right now (and loving them)... My long runs are around 14 miles....  My training log is not up to date... Sorry but I got a Garmin and the Garmin Connect website is SOOOO easy and conveniant that I stopped updating on here :-(...

Most people don't run the full distance in training even for a marathon.  The 50K will be similar to the marathon, 5 more miles (but usually off-road).

I did a few 20+ runs with the longest being 28 miles leading up to my 50-miler.  My buddy who did the 100 would do the 20+ with us on Saturday and then another 10-20 on Sunday.  That's probably about the most anyone would have time to run and still lead a "normal" life.

I posted this in another thread, you can use as it as a guide.

I came up with based on my own recovery rate and based on well I was responding from each workout to ensure I was not loggin in junk miles. This priciple is the same if I am running a 50 or a 100 miler. I believe in doing back to back long runs on the weekend.

this is all based on time
2 day back to back total run mileage should be arund 45% of weekly mileage
day 1 of b2b should be around 55-60% of 2 day volume then making day 2 around 40-45% od weekend volume.

Here is a little gee-whiz in regards to pacing...

What I learned from running a 100- 2 weeks ago when I finished 15th out of like 280 in 21 hours I still walked around 40 out of the 100 miles. I paced 3 min run and 3 min walk from the start through 50 miles. After the half mark I went to 6 min run 3 min walk through 91 miles then ran last 9 into the finish.
