Sorry if I missed this already. If I didn't miss it, I can't believe no one posted it yet.

Okay, here's where I am going to differ from the masses, perhaps. I find myself identifying more with the muscle dude. Planet Fitness is all about not letting people like that into their gyms (they actually have a no grunting policy), which is laughable. Most of the lifters I know are serious about their bodies, eating right, and testing their limits. They also know what goes into building a better machine, and that sometimes includes shakes/protein drinks.

And then I look at that pansy-assed khaki guy giving the tour, and I think he could really, seriously benefit from occasionally picking something up and putting it down. Try lifting something besides  the weekend Michelob Ultra you cling so smugly to on your Friday night out with the boys, and stow those ugly pants along with the backwards baseball cap with the adjustable band you insist makes you look hip.  To insinuate this -hat is somehow superior to the guy who lifts heavy weights is laughable, at best.

Which brings me to the second guy in the commercial. Just what the hell is that douchenozzle doing on that machine? Seriously. And, as a follow-up question, why is he doing it. Listen brother, if you can't answer both of those questions, get to a library or a lifting site until you can.

And another thing. The lifter dude works his legs. He's not one of those curls-for-the-girls guys who thinks a squat rack is for hanging your towel, be it ever-so-moist from the dewy wipe down required after a heady 20 pound DB toe raise. F$%&. If I was the lifting guy and I went to that gym the best part of the freaking tour would have been when they showed me the door.

Here endeth the rant, and like that.

...

That body was NOT achieved by lifting things up and putting them down while swigging protein drinks.

And I counter-rant you with this: What is the purpose of having muscles large enough to pick up a Buick in one's daily life? Apart from the vanity preening like a bunch of peacocks showing off their pretty (and pretty useless) tail feathers in some sort of paean to a self-obsessed narcissism, I mean.

Yes, clearly the ripped shirt and daisy-dukes speak to how he has "hulked out", and has a much keener fashion sense that the person wearing an outfit that would not attract second looks at the bar/office/street.  And of course, the recondite discourse that these ponderous brutes would have at the coffee shop/library/restaurant makes it all worthwhile. Because women really love a date that focuses on the best workout and protein regimen.

How about if we just laugh at that one guy in the spot without making sweeping generalizations about bodybuilders or triathletes (another group it's pretty easy to poke fun at with their stupid lycra outfits, etc.)?

What's the purpose of signing up for and completing/competing in triathlons? Or even more extreme, an IM? Or a marathon? Apart from the fact that you can go around wearing race shirts and finisher's medals, and tell everyone you're a triathlete, that is.

Why judge the interests of others and mock them?

There is no purpose to it.  And if the original rant made it seem that being a triathlete was the be-all and end-all of fitness, I would have counter-ranted that as well.

I do it as practice.  When the zombie apocalypse comes, the ability to swim, bike, or run from a zombie horde (potentially for hours on end), will be very important.

LOL  Yeah, I've been lifting since I was 14 so I know my way around a gym just fine.  I joined L.A. Fitness due to the convenience of the pool.  I can now slip over on my lunch hour and do a quick 30-40 min swim as much as 5 times a week and I'm not tired when I get home so I have more time to run or bike.

That said, these guys were chomping at the bit to give me advice before they knew anything about my goals.  When I joined, the first question was, "what are you doing right now."  At the time, I said that I was running around 20 miles a week, swimming around 2-3 hours and biking around 6hrs.  The reply was, "that's too much cardio, can we do a fitness assessment?"  WTF?  I'll admit that I was already a bit judgmental at the spray tan and the pink sweater tied around his neck but that easily put it over the top for me.

I go and I swim.  The folks at the one I use at lunch are always very friendly so I have no complaints.  I do understand their commercials because they want to create a non-intimidating atmosphere but I know where you are coming from too.
