Regular 83 Maryland | Subject: Will my back EVER get better?? Hi. I'm a beginner runner. I have a few 5K's under my belt and a 5-miler. I've signed up for a mid-April Du (sprint? It's 2:10:3.1). Back in late January, we had a wind/snow storm that dumped some heavy snow. I shoveled. I moved large tree branches from our driveway. I threw out my back. I spent time at my chiropractor (but haven't gone for a few weeks now). I've been doing exercises, stretches, ice. Everything that I think would help me get back into the swing of things. Everything that USED to get me back into the swing of things when my back acted up. At 43, I guess I don't heal as quickly as I used to, but I feel like I'll NEVER get my "normal" back...back. Every morning it's stiff and sore and I need 3 Advil and light calisthenics just to get warmed up and moving. By evening, it generally loosens up, I'm feeling okay. I tried a morning run recently, when my back was feeling okay, got 1/2 mile into it, and my lower back started SCREAMING at me. I turned around and walked home. The one saving grace is that riding a bike is pretty much pain free for me, so I've been back to riding my commuter to work pretty regularly. I guess the obvious solution to my inability to run would be - run in the evening. Right? Or is it? I actually prefer morning runs. So, do I give that up and try an evening schedule? What else will it take for my back to get better? I'm beginning to get a little freaked out here (oh...and I have an April 1st 5K scheduled). |

Veteran 243 | Subject: RE: Will my back EVER get better?? Hey there, I don't have much to offer but empathy. I've been struggling with low back and neck pain for nearly a year now (not very supportive, am I?) and experience some similarities to your situation. I don't really believe in the chiropractic approach - always treating symptoms, never causes - but back pain can be extremely intrasigent and anything that helps, go for it. I absolutely avoid any exercise in the a.m., except gentle stretching and core strengthening (I use yoga and Pilates). That's helped immensely. I still walk my dogs most mornings, but I pay for it with pain all day. At least I don't HAVE to take anti-inflammatory drugs every day, though I do use them from time to time. My doctor prescribed a topical NSAID, which I can't remember the name of right now (sorry again!) so I don't have to deal with the stomach and bleeding issues systemics give me. Keep avoiding painful things and trying adjustments. Make sure your bike fit is good, or you'll eventually have problems there, too. Keep that core strong, too. I hope you eventually recover or hit on the right program! |

Constantly in pain...went to the dr, but my options are limited due to other health issues. Muscle relaxants take the edge off, but leave me dopey. Really hoping I start feeling some improvements soon. I need to get back to work and I have some events planned in the spring that require a bit of training.

Veteran 155 Pittsburgh, PA | Subject: RE: Will my back EVER get better?? I'm suffering now too. I was doing speed drills last Wednesday and decided to cool down with jumping rope. One jump later and snap. My lower back is screaming and I can't do much of anything 5 days later I'm still in pain. Went to the doc and they say it's muscular. They gave me a steroid and vicaden and sent me on my way. Not much explaination but plenty of good luck wishes. So with that, any helpful hints to get back to my normal routing would be very helpful.

Give your back time to rest and heal. Try to avoid extended time in the car or sitting still. I'm suffering now too. I had a day where I was out and about driving around town and going to meetings. I didn't do anything that was physically demanding, but the next day I was in incredible pain and could barely move. I am starting to see some progress, but if I sit poorly for a little while in front of my computer my back locks up again. Any driving more than a quick trip also leaves me in pain. Best wishes! |

1 | Subject: RE: Will my back EVER get better?? I would suggest you see a ART Chiropractor to get checked out instead of a regular Chiro. I am an ART doc in Dallas, Tx and treat Ultra Distance Marathoners to weekend warriors and would suggest the doctor to look at your Hip Flexors or (Psoas Muscle) and hip joints. This muscle connets to your spine and your hips and is a huge underlooked reason for persistant low back pain. Find a doc to get the adhesions out of the muscle and your Facet Joint or Low back pain will get much better. Also look at your feet, are you an over-pronator? If so this is a huge cause of low back, hip, and knee pain while running. Go to Biocorrect.com and get some true custom orthotics made to allow you to run with less or no pain... If none of this helps, then see a pain management doctor (PM&R) to get a MRI to possibly get a Lumbar Facet Block or Epidural Steroid Injection to get the inflammation out of the spine itself.... THANKS a bunch. Great stuff on the net -- I'm learning more and more every day. I slowly started to swim today - 7 days later. I hope another couple days and I'll be in a position for a slow - short jog |

I've been a devout believer in exercise all my life and then started having back pain. Have you gotten a diagnosis from a spine specialist (not a chiro, not a GP, but a doctor with a fellowship in treating spines)? Do you know what is causing your back pain? 3 years is a long time to suffer with back pain...trust me, I know because I've had a chronic back condition for most of my 45 years. But I know the cause of my pain. And yes, I totally agree that surgery should be the last resort, and more conservative methods should be tried first. Have you had an MRI done? I realize they are costly but at least you would have a better idea of what you're dealing with. Edited by nscrbug 2011-03-29 9:17 PM |

Expert 1183 Fort Wayne, IN | Subject: RE: Will my back EVER get better?? I have chronic upper back pain that has been under control (for the most part) since I had an injury 20 years ago. The injury turned out to be muscular and the chiropractor made things MUCH worse. When things get bad for me I go to a physical therapist that does myofacial release. This loosens up the muscles and they give you exercise/stretching to keep things loose. This might help. . . |
