Subject: Stretching and Foam Roller question
So I was thinking the other day after my LSD run.  I used the foam roller on my legs, specificially my IT Band and then stretched the rest of my legs after using the foam roller.

So I'm curious is it better to roll then stretch

OR

Stretch then roll?

Discuss.

Am I understanding correctly that you're just curious about the order to do it in?

As I understand how to use the roller, your muscles should already be warmed-up. With that in mind, I stretch first if I've not yet been active that day. If I just got off the bike or back from a run, I use the roller first and then stretch.

I don't know if it makes any difference in the end, but when my muscles are "cold", the roller hurts my IT band a little when I start on it.

I've been told to roll first then workout or stretch.  The rolling gets the muscles loosened up, so they are ready for other things.

I am currently receiving ART treatment on my lower body from hip flexors to ankles. My specialist is having me foam roll all areas 3 times per week and is doing ART on my legs 2 times a week.  On the days that I am receiving ART treament, I am not to roll at all.

On the days that I am running and not receiving ART treatment, he has me foam roll, then stretch, then run.

I am to stretch all seven days a week.

So for my tight, knotted muscles; I am rolling first, then stretching, then exercising all under orders from the ART guy.
