I'm not sure what "high volume" is...

BUT, my first year, I had shoulder pain in my left.  I believe it was due to poor form and slightly crossing my centerline.  It could have also been a little "too much too soon"...

Anyway, once I worked on my technique, it solved the problem.  Pain free for years... Including training for two IM's.

Now if I could just say the same about my knees, which are starting to act up.

Yes, but it's as a result of an old baseball injury I just never had taken care of.  It hurts often even when I'm not swimming.  However, while swimming the pain will come on early in my workout, then fade, then maybe come back, then fade... and so on.  It's primarily on the rotation of the shoulder when my arm is out of the water.  I can't throw a ball without my shoulder popping.

I have chronic issues with my right shoulder (acutally my whole right side of my body in general).  Two things have helped--changing my swim stroke and not lifting weights.  I started swimming with a masters group last fall and the coach told me only needed to entry slightly underwater and to "scrunch" my shoulders up buy my cheeks.  If I focus on my form, I'm totally fine.  Through trial and error I figured out if I'm swimming AND lifting then I have shoulder pain (mine is more by my scapula).  I can't do both or I have pain.  So I no longer lift.

I have issues with my right shoulder. I played tennis for 15 years, so I attribute some of my shoulder pain to that. I am working hard on high elbow recovery. It is an issue of mine. I attribute most of my shoulder pain to poor rotation.

Nope. I'm good to go and entering my 3rd decade swimming, including a very very long period of high volume.

I answered "I used to have pain when I swim, but no longer do". Knock on wood...  (I'm hardly 'high volume', though.)

Of course there are many possible causes, hence cures for, shoulder pain. I believe that in my case my (poor) stroke caused impingement both during recovery (thanks TJ) and during the pull (thanks float and paddle drill).

In any case, I now have zero shoulder pain.  I've been super-conservative about coming back to swimming, and continually in fear of renewed pain, but so far (knock on wood), going strong.

(Suzanne, I owe you a promised video comparison.   I borrowed the camera today, will film tomorrow, and post as soon as I can process the video.)

During 2010 when I started ramping up my swimming volume I started having right shoulder pain that wouldn't go away.  Still being fairly new to swimming - my technique was flawed enough that I was experiencing impingement issues.  Improving technique has alleviated 75% of the pain and it continues to get better.  High intensity swims still aggravate the old injury to some extent but not enough for me to warrant getting it surgically corrected.  I'm assuming it's probably a torn rotator cuff.

I occasionally got pain in high school, but once my coach corrected my problem of crossing over, it went away, and hasn't ever come back.

One of my shoulders is definitely tighter than the other, and if I don't stretch enough I think that is the cause of pain that I might experience (its not everyday pain). Also, I feel like when I do NOT lift regularly to balance my muscles (I'm clearly weaker on one side), that will also cause pain. Why can't swimming be less maintenance?! It's soo much funnn

i found that my shoulder hurt when i use to sleep on my right side....(the side i breath on, primarily)

i had to do and experiment to figure it out though.. i slept on my stomach for one month.. (i don't toss and turn when i sleep so it was easy).. no shoulder problems at all for months after..

this is something you could check out..

I already answered but I should also note that my shoulder pain was always my left shoulder which is also the side I used to carry my kids around. I believe this compounded the problem. They are now too big for me to carry and my shoulder miraculously feels great.

I swam for a couple of years with a twinge in my left shoulder, which sometimes led to tingling in my fingers. It had me pretty worried. Advice here on BT taught me to keep my hand in front of the shoulder. I had been reaching for the point in front of my head. The issue went away with the correction in technique.

I usually never had shoulder problems, but after doing a heavy lifting session (for the first time in a long time) I hopped in the pool the next day and my shoulder started to hurt, so I got out. Now it's been two days, each day I've gone into the pool and immediately exited because of (right) shoulder pain. My first tri is in 2 days, luckily it's a sprint so the swim won't be that long but it's gonna suck for sure...
