Subject: "Flat" bike route

I am looking for a relatively flat route around raleigh.  I am training for WL half and want to mimic the course as best possible.  Does anyone have any recommendations... if not, is there any good places to ride within reasonable driving distance (<1 hour) that will be more suitable.

Thanks,

Brad

Not too sure you will find as flat as WL around Raleigh/Cary. The link below is a route I have done a bunch. I think it is as flat as you are going to get for Raleigh/Cary/Apex area. It is a 31mi loop, but you can add another 17mi loop around Jordan lake by going straight just past 23mi (as you go over the lake) instead of turning left onto Martha's Chapel. By going straight at that point you will just repeat the course you did by starting at around 8mi point of original course.

More important (to me) than the flatness is getting used to the wind.  It can get brutal out there.  Make sure you go for rides on the windest days to get a feel for what is can/will be like.

Yeah I raced the IOS internation distance last year at WL so I am aware of the wind.

from experience, i say ride what you can at distance. You'll be fine. The wind is only on the 2nd half and the tar strips are friggin annoying.

I'll probably head down to do a test WK ride pre HIM... if so I'll post it here and gauge interest.

The route that qrkid pointed you to is super. that stretch on 4 will give you a nice wind and it's pretty and the shoulder is wide so it's safe. I've even done repeats on that section!!

Good luck finding a decently flat area around Raleigh.  I just moved from RAL to Jacksonville, NC... Like the previous posters said, your issue will be WIND.

The wind around here is brutal.

The closest flat course I know of is the Battle of Buckhorn tri course.  It is fast and pretty flat. http://www.fsseries.com/index.php?action=event&event_id=45

Last year a group of us went down to White Lake to ride the course.  It's good to get used to flats if you're used to hills because you never get that break from pedaling at White Lake like you would on the downhills.  It's like riding a trainer for 56 miles.  And of course White Lake is always windy and the bike course has zero shade.  Riding the course beforehand is a great way to get your butt used to the rough road- ouch!

As others have mentioned, some stretches on 64 is good practice for no shade and the wind factor.

Anyone interested in heading down there again this year to ride the course???

Get on a trainer and ride 3 hours and bore yourself to death and try to stay aero.
Congratulations you just did the White Lake half-iron course.

Nah, at least at White Lake there will be plenty of bikes to look at as you pass or are passed.

3 of us went down to White Lake on Saturday.  Got about 40 miles in before the rain started.  Last 15 miles was in a steady rain.  Looking forward to riding it in better weather..........

Winds were a small factor on the first part out Hwy 41, but not as bad as I was expecting.  Across 210 and back in on 53 not much wind at all.
