Age Group Rank = 2/4
Pre-race routine:

Forget goggles, forget waterbottle (bike) but remember CAWFEE!
Swim
  • 14m 51s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 59s / 100 meters
Comments:

Oh man, the swim was un fracaso. At the last minute the added in our group and had all the women (15-50+) go at once so I scrambled to get my goggles put and was WAY at the back of the pack. I was breathing every single stroke - I couldn't see the bottom (muddy) until we got to the laguna and headed up river. The contracorriente was insane and the river was FULL of people. Caught up the the wave ahead of us by the first bouy and came out of the water pretty highly placed (I think), 3 minutes behind the fastest girl/woman. Bounced from manglar to manglar and rarely had open water. Came out breathing HARD.
What would you do differently?:

remember my goggles! Start closer to the front of the pack. Train more.
Transition 1
  • 03m 19s
Comments:

This time must have included all the running from transition to the area where we could mount the bike (250 m). Transition was not very fluid for me, but I did my best.
What would you do differently?:

practice transition.
Bike
  • 37m 10s
  • 20 kms
  • 32.29 km/hr
Comments:

I KILLED the bike. My hr was in the mid 150s the whole time. 2nd lap I found a wheel and 3rd lap we had a train. We were regularly over 34kph. I wish I'd timed this - out on the carretera we were killing the bike. Nobody passed me - wait 2 guys did, the 3rd guy I jumped on his wheel (1st lap). I had NO WATER and was DYING coming off the bike. also, this time included T2 and running to the first mat for the run, so I'm pretty sure my bike was at least 3 min faster.
What would you do differently?:

BRING WATER!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

No idea what happened here - no time results.
Run
  • 31m
  • 5 kms
  • 06m 12s  min/km
Comments:

I'm guessing on the time here as for some reason my chip didn't register the run. I was just hanging on here as my calf was severely cramping immediately off the bike. I was seriously limping at the end - they even remarked at the finish - and would not have been able to finish a 10K.
What would you do differently?:

gotta figure out what the hell is going on with that leg.
Post race
Warm down:

Huh? You're supposed to warm down? Lifeguards took me immediately to the massage tables and cleared one and had them work on my calf.

Kathy,

Your leg cramps. For a reason they call nutrition "The Fourth Event" and it is by far the easiest to screw up.

After the bike, you were obviously dehydrated and I can assume lacking electrolytes.

Try to keep up with your calories, water and electrolytes intake, specially as you move into longer distances.

A salt pill or electrolyte pill every 20' to 30' depending on your sweat rate, will greatly help avoid cramps.

Thst's just my two cents,

Good luck
