Subject: Faster running outside?

Hi ya'll.  This is my first post... if it's stupid, or has been covered ad nauseum somewhere else, I apologize in advance.  I'm really just perplexed...

I used to run only on the treadmill ..and had accepted my sad, terrible 14-15.0 mile per minute pace.  Recently,I started hitting the road to run and have completed some races.  My average pace outside and racing according to my Garmin and watch is anywhere from 9:30-11 minute miles.  What gives?

Why in the world would I run so much faster outside? I always thought the treadmill was an easier run?

Thanks...

The treadmill may not be calibrated correctly.

See, I thought about that... but I have a treadmill at home, and I use one at two different gyms over the weeks... and it's all the same.  And the Garmin also logs me that slow on the treadmill (I wear the foot pod while running).  I really just am dumbfounded by the whole thing...

I find it easier to keep faster paces outdoors.

Have you tried cranking up the treadmill to your outside times? I've noticed that the treadmill seems really fast on slower speeds but actually seems easier on faster speeds. A slow recovery run always seems harder on the tm than outside but a tempo run always seems easier on the TM than outside.

I'm the same. I even put my bikes on the treadmill b/c I thought the speed was off. I can't figure it out and at this point I really don't care to.  I know that I will generally take about 1:00 - 1:30 off per mile outside with the same effort.

You rode your bike on a treadmill?

Do you have video?

I noticed treadmills at my local gym are off... I know roughly how long it takes me run most distances at my target aerobic hr, so I just go by time on the treadmill.

I experience the same as the poster above who mentioned that the slower paces on the treadmill seem a bit more difficult.

I haven't run outside since August, but last year I was about 30 seconds per mile faster outside than n the treadmill.  I suspect the same this year once I finally get outside

I was just explaining this same problem to my husband...almost identical paces even. I don't get it either, but am happy I am not alone!

It may be "easier", but it isn't faster, at least in my experience.  It is easier because treadmills are generally built with some cushioning to be a bit softer on the feet than cement.  That energy is sucked up by the cushioning and isn't helping propel you.  There are also typically a lot of heat load issues - an indoor setting generally gets a lot hotter than outside, and that slows you down a lot.  And on top of that it may be miscalibrated.  Oh, and it is *&^*&%$% boring as hell.

^^^ This would be my explaination. Running on a treadmill is torture for me. I can run all day outside regardless of the conditions.

Yep, I'll put up with any weather condition vs. a treadmill run!!! Guess you can say that when you live in Arizona, tho! lol!
