Lake Zurich Triathlon - TriathlonOlympic

View Member's Race Log
Lake Zurich, Illinois
United States
75F / 24C
Overcast
Total Time = 2h 57m
Overall Rank = 517/634
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 24/36
Pre-race routine:

Got into car and drove to Lake Zurich... road construction in the area... drank a couple of cups of coffee... Woke up sweaty, so I think my fever broke while I was sleeping. Felt better than I did on Saturday, although my stomach was very upset... nerves.

Event warmup:

Got into the water... (the muddy water, I might add) of Lake Zurich. Water was warm... just got wet and waited in line for my turn to start... Did a little socializing with people here and there...
Swim
  • 28m 39s
  • 1637 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

A pretty good swim for me... I estimated my time at 28 minutes or so... so this made me happy, especially sans wetsuit.
What would you do differently?:

Not much... I stayed close to the bouy lines and I think that helped keep me on course.
Transition 1
  • 03m 2s
Comments:

A pretty easy T1... I didn't wear a wetsuit, so I didn't have to spend time peeling the dang thing off.
What would you do differently?:

Not much... maybe run the WHOLE time from the exit of the lake to the transition area... I did walk fast instead of running for a portion of the time...
Bike
  • 1h 11m 18s
  • 22.4 miles
  • 18.85 mile/hr
Comments:

Some guy was racing me the whole way... When I saw the markings on his calf I noticed he was in the 10-17 age group... OMG... Here I am, a woman practically 35 years old... racing a 10-17 year old kid! What is wrong with me????
What would you do differently?:

Not much... mabye spend less time drag racing Junior and more time worrying about my own speed and cadence...
Transition 2
  • 02m 5s
Comments:

An easy T2
What would you do differently?:

Not much.
Run
  • 1h 11m 18s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 11m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Had to stop and walk for parts of the run... Met up with an older man who also had to stop sometimes, and we alternated stopping and starting and talking...
What would you do differently?:

Try to run more.
Post race
Warm down:

Hung around and talked with some of my tri friends from the gym...

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Genetics... and being sick and tired of training. My plan this year is wrong... need to focus on running and do fruitful running tasks rather than just piling on the junk miles. (and I'm not even piling that many junk miles on!!!) I started out strong this season and am winding up lacking focus and energy.

Event comments:

A nice race... this was the 10th anniversary of the Lake Zurich triathlon.. and it filled up completely. A nice, well organized race.

Great race, Whizz, esp. considering you were sick. Wow. And concerning the training thing...it's cool to figure this stuff out, isn't it?  This sport is so complicated and I don't care if you've been doing it for 20 years, there's always new stuff to learn.

Oh...and my favorite part of your RR:

"Here I am, a woman practically 35 years old... racing a 10-17 year old kid! What is wrong with me????"

How cool is that! Way to race that punk kid!

Nice job Whizz. You've earned the Big Mac! I have to tell you, that your physique over the time we've been on this board has really improved. You look sooooo thin! Nice job and keep smiling If it were easy, everyone would be doing it!

Great race!!  Especially considering you were sick going into it....certainly doesn't make an Oly any easier, does it??

Awesome swim - I wish I could move that fast in the water!

Cool pictures, too, btw.

Thanks for the kind words everyone... I think I was just on the VERGE of getting some sort of bug... I rested my A$$ off on Saturday... barely moved at all... and then took a nap.... to rest some more!

Chucky, thanks for the compliment! I've been biking biking biking... I think that has caused a signficant decrease in the girth of my butt/thighs/legs!

Whizzzzzzzzzzz
